An 84-year-old man died and four other people were hurt Thursday night when three vehicles collided at the intersection of the northbound Central Westchester Parkway and North Broadway in North White Plains. The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. and involved a 2026 Mercedes driven by the victim, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the four surviving victims were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
According to a News 12 New York report, scene video showed a gray sedan and a navy blue SUV pulled to the side of the road, with a dark-colored Cadillac Escalade stopped on the other side of the street. North Castle Police confirmed the crash occurred in the Town of North Castle, and the North Castle Police Department identified the Mercedes as the vehicle driven by the 84-year-old man, per a statement reported by Daily Voice. The extent of the four victims' injuries was not immediately known, and the crash remains under investigation.
Emergency crews transported the four injured people to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, which serves as the Hudson Valley's only American College of Surgeons-verified Level I Adult Trauma Center, according to the same Daily Voice report. Local emergency response in North White Plains runs through municipal agencies including the North Castle Police Department and North Castle South Fire District #1, per New York State Department of Health EMS records. Police have not released the identity of the man who died, nor have they assigned fault for the three-vehicle collision.
A Known Trouble Spot for Years
The crash site sits at a notable chokepoint in the local road network. Central Westchester Parkway, also known as Westchester County Route 150, is a four-lane divided arterial highway that runs north from I-287 in White Plains and terminates directly at North Broadway, or NYS Route 22, in North White Plains, according to Wikipedia and East Coast Roads data.
That junction has drawn scrutiny from local planners for years. A Westchester County Department of Planning transportation study explicitly designated the intersection of North Broadway and the Central Westchester Parkway as a high-accident hot spot within the Town of North Castle. The same study found that NYS Route 22 logged 418 traffic accidents over a four-year planning period, making it the most accident-prone state highway corridor within North Castle's municipal boundaries.
Higher Speed Limits Despite the Risk
Traffic along that stretch also moves faster than on nearby residential streets. When the neighboring City of White Plains lowered its municipal speed limit to 25 mph in 2024, North Broadway and the Central Westchester Parkway were among 10 major arterial roadways explicitly exempted due to high traffic volume, according to News 12 Westchester, which reported the roads can carry speeds up to 45 mph.
The county has not ignored the corridor entirely. Westchester County allocated $4.12 million under Capital Project P0030 for infrastructure updates along the Central Westchester Parkway, including road resurfacing, concrete curb replacement, drainage repairs, and new traffic signal detection loops, according to county budget records.
Older Drivers and Crash Risk Statewide
The age of Thursday's victim adds a layer of statewide context to the local tragedy. According to Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research data published by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and cited by the NYS Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, drivers aged 65 and older represent roughly 21% of licensed drivers in New York but account for only 11% to 17% of fatal and personal injury crashes statewide.
State law leaves oversight of aging drivers largely in the hands of families and physicians rather than automatic rules. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 506, physicians may voluntarily report driver medical impairments to the Department of Motor Vehicles for re-evaluation, but the state imposes no mandatory reporting requirement for elderly or impaired drivers, according to the law firm Horn Wright, LLP.
North Castle Police have not released the victim's name or determined fault in Thursday's crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details on the condition of the four injured victims have been made public.
