An 87-year-old woman riding a mobility scooter was struck by a driver in Chino last Thursday afternoon and later died from her injuries, according to police. The collision happened in the 11600 block of Central Avenue at about 4:05 p.m. Authorities have not publicly explained what led to it.
According to the Daily Bulletin, the woman was using an electric mobility scooter when a Chino resident struck her, per Chino police. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries, police said. As of the report, investigators had not released her identity.
The driver involved in the crash was identified as 32-year-old Zhang Huiyaen of Chino. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
No Signs of Impairment, Police Say
Police said alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a factor in the collision, according to the Daily Bulletin's reporting. That detail leaves the central question of how the crash occurred unresolved for now, with investigators still working to determine what led the driver to strike the woman as she traveled on her scooter.
Neither the woman's name nor additional details about the circumstances of the crash — including what, if anything, might have contributed to it beyond the absence of suspected impairment — had been made public at the time of the reports. The cause remains under investigation, and no further details about the vehicle or road conditions were available.
Crashes Remain a Persistent Problem Countywide
The fatal crash lands amid a broader pattern of roadway danger across San Bernardino County. County data cited by San Bernardino County's community indicators program shows that 14,743 people were injured or killed in vehicle collisions countywide in 2025, including 213 deaths. Statewide, pedestrian fatalities climbed from 2016 through 2022 before beginning a downward trend, according to data compiled by UC Berkeley's California Active Transportation Safety Information Pages (CATSIP).
Investigators in Chino are still working to determine exactly what happened on Central Avenue last Thursday.
