An 88-year-old woman has died more than five weeks after she was struck by a car while crossing in a marked crosswalk near East Pebble Road and South Maryland Parkway in the Silverado Ranch area, with police now confirming her death is tied to that August 14 crash. She initially appeared to have only minor injuries. Then a fall during her recovery, and a hospital stay that dragged on for weeks, ended in her death on September 22.

According to FOX5 Las Vegas, a 2011 Toyota Highlander traveling westbound on Pebble Road was turning left onto Maryland Parkway on a flashing yellow arrow when it struck the woman as she crossed in the marked crosswalk. She was taken to Saint Rose Dominican's Sienna Hospital campus with what first appeared to be minor injuries.

A Recovery That Took a Dark Turn

That initial diagnosis didn't hold. Further evaluation showed that her injuries were more severe than first believed and that she required ongoing medical care, per the same report. She remained hospitalized for weeks as she tried to recover.

Then, on September 16, she fell while in recovery and sustained additional injuries, the station's report states. Her condition did not improve. She succumbed to her injuries on September 22, more than a month after the initial crash.

Why The Case Is Only Surfacing Now

LVMPD's Collision Investigation Section was not notified of her death until October 22, the same day the crash became public knowledge, and the case remains under investigation. Because her death came more than 30 days after the original collision, officials say they follow federal guidelines that count a death as a traffic fatality only if it happens within that window — meaning this case will not be reflected in federal fatality statistics, even though police attribute her death to the crash.

It's a pattern that has played out before in the Las Vegas Valley this year. In June, a 67-year-old pedestrian was struck near Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road when a Chevrolet Silverado making a right turn hit the person stepping into its path, as FOX5 Las Vegas reported separately. That pedestrian was initially taken to Sunrise Hospital with only minor injuries, but their condition later deteriorated, and they were pronounced dead on July 5. Police said that driver showed no signs of impairment.

Pedestrian Deaths Still Make Up Half Of Valley Fatal Crashes

Citywide numbers suggest this year has actually trended safer than most, even as pedestrian crashes remain stubbornly common. LVMPD's jurisdiction has logged more than 200 pedestrian-related crashes in 2026, with 17 of them fatal, according to KTNV. The department had recorded 35 fatal crashes overall so far this year, fewer than at the same point in 2025. LVMPD Officer Robert Wicks told the station that the most common reason for pedestrian fatalities is pedestrian error, though driver behavior — including speeding and failure to yield — remains a factor in many crashes.

Statewide figures tell a similar story. Nevada traffic fatalities fell 11.88% during the first eight months of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, with 230 deaths reported versus 261, according to the Las Vegas Sun. Clark County, the state's most populous county, saw an even steeper drop, with 127 fatalities down 24.85% from 169 a year earlier. Pedestrian deaths specifically totaled 63 statewide through August, down from 65 over the same stretch in 2025. Those figures remain preliminary, with the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety noting the 2026 data will not be final until early 2028, as Nevada Business Magazine reported.
