A 9-year-old boy was struck by a car just before 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Halstead and North Barry avenues in the Village of Mamaroneck, according to police. Investigators said the child did not appear to have serious injuries, and paramedics took him to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation.

Police charged the alleged driver with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, according to News12 Hudson Valley. The driver's identity had not been immediately released, and no further details on the child's condition were available as of Wednesday evening.

A Village Grappling With Repeat Crashes

Wednesday's crash is the latest in a string of pedestrian collisions that have rattled the small Westchester County village over the past several months. In September, a 17-year-old driver with a learner's permit jumped the curb on Mamaroneck Avenue and struck four women on the sidewalk near 251 Mamaroneck Avenue, according to Hoodline's earlier coverage. Police said at the time that the teen, who was supervised by his father, told investigators he had confused the brake and accelerator pedals.

Two of the four women struck in that incident, ages 20 and 26, were taken to Westchester Medical Center, while the other two, ages 24 and 26, declined medical attention at the scene, per the same report. Months earlier, in March, a mother and her two children were struck in a Village of Mamaroneck crosswalk, suffering minor injuries, the outlet also noted.

Echoes of a Deeper Pattern

News 12 Westchester also reported on that March crash: a mother and her two children were struck by a car while crossing a street in the village, and none of the three suffered serious injuries, according to News12 Westchester. The pattern stretches back further still: in June 2024, a 6-year-old boy and his mother were fatally struck near Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School, per Hoodline's reporting.

Village officials have acknowledged pedestrian safety concerns along some of the same corridors where these crashes have occurred. Westchester County and the Village of Mamaroneck have approved an All Pedestrian Phase at the stop light at Mamaroneck Avenue and New Street, according to the Village of Mamaroneck. Separately, village traffic committee minutes from 2022 show officials had been trying to address traffic and pedestrian safety issues, including upgrades to sidewalks and traffic signals at the Halstead Avenue and North Barry intersection, the same intersection where Wednesday's crash occurred.

No additional information about the driver or the charge's disposition had surfaced as of Wednesday evening. Hoodline will update this story as more details become available.
