A two-vehicle crash on Air Expressway in Adelanto left one driver in critical condition Saturday night, with westbound lanes shut down at Adelanto Road as crews worked the scene. The crash was reported at about 7:30 p.m. west of Adelanto Road, just across from High Season Dispensary, and sent one driver to a trauma center by helicopter.
The crash involved a white Honda CR-Z with front-end damage and a white Nissan Sentra with major passenger-side damage, according to VVNG. Neither vehicle had passengers, and the two drivers were the only people hurt in the collision. The driver of the Nissan Sentra was listed in critical condition and required a helicopter transport to a trauma center, while the driver of the Honda sustained only minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Mary Medical Center.
Fire Crews Respond, Report Two Patients
Firefighters with the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the crash and reported two patients at the scene, the outlet's report notes. The severity of the Nissan driver's injuries was serious enough to warrant air transport rather than a ground ambulance, underscoring how serious the impact appears to have been given the damage described to both vehicles.
While crews worked the crash, the westbound lanes of Air Expressway were closed at Adelanto Road, though the eastbound lanes remained open to traffic. How long the closure lasted has not been reported. The crash remains under investigation, possibly by the Adelanto Police Department, per the same account.
Another Deadly Crash Haunts the Same Corridor
Air Expressway has seen tragedy before. A separate crash on the same roadway in San Bernardino County left two people dead and another injured, according to KTLA. That crash involved a gold Mercedes CLK320 and a silver Honda Accord, and the Honda driver along with Mercedes passenger Destiny Simon sustained major injuries and were pronounced deceased at the scene. KTLA reported that the roadway between Gas Line Road and North D Street was closed for several hours while that earlier crash remained under investigation.
No further details have been released about what led to Saturday's two-vehicle collision, and the investigation into the cause remains ongoing. This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
