Italian Crust, the pizzeria that served Grapevine diners pies, calzones, and pasta for the better part of a decade, has permanently closed its doors at 2140 Hall-Johnson Road, Suite 100. A notice posted at the entrance thanked customers and the community for their continued support, confirming the shutdown took effect at the start of October.
The closure was first reported by Community Impact Newspaper, which noted that Italian Crust got its start in 2005 as a delivery and take-out operation in Irving before relocating to Grapevine in 2018, when it expanded to include full dine-in service. For 21 years, the business built a menu around handcrafted pizzas, pasta, calzones, and sandwiches. The menu also included Mediterranean pizza and baked ziti, and Italian Crust had a delivery listing on Uber Eats.
A Strip Center With Deep Roots in Grapevine
Italian Crust occupied space inside Heritage Crossing, a 22,775-square-foot shopping center at the same Hall-Johnson Road address that is owned and managed by Glazer Properties, according to the firm's own property listing. The retail center's other tenants include The UPS Store, Leslie's Pool Supplies, and a tobacco shop, per the same listing.
The center is zoned Community Commercial. It's unclear whether lease terms at the shopping center played any role in Italian Crust's decision to close, or whether the owners plan to pursue a new concept or a delivery-only model going forward.
Part of a Record Year for Texas Restaurant Closures
Italian Crust's shutdown lands squarely within a historic wave of restaurant failures across the state. Texas led the nation with an estimated 1,039 restaurant closures in the first half of 2026, representing 12.7% of all midyear closures across the United States and Canada, according to market research from RestaurantData reported by EATS Broker.
The Dallas-Fort Worth region alone saw roughly 240 restaurant locations permanently close during that same six-month stretch, as reported by The Dallas Express, which also found that full-service restaurant employment statewide remained 183,000 jobs below pre-pandemic levels as of June 2026. A February 2026 report said 88% of Texas restaurant operators reported higher food costs, 66% faced growing wage burdens, and 52% saw declining customer foot traffic — pressures that squeeze independent, single-location restaurants especially hard.
That squeeze shows up nationally too. Independent restaurants accounted for 47.9%, or about 3,914 locations, of all restaurant closures across North America in the first half of 2026, nearly matching the 52.1% closure share tied to chain-affiliated restaurants, according to research from RestaurantData.
Grapevine's Mixed Economic Signals
The closure comes even as Grapevine's municipal finances look relatively healthy. The Grapevine City Council voted in September to lower the city's property tax rate for the 2026-2027 fiscal year to $0.226817 per $100 of valuation, according to Community Impact Newspaper.
Grapevine's Destination Entertainment District recorded visitor growth of 0.2% as of June 2026.
What comes next for the Hall-Johnson Road suite remains unknown, including whether a new tenant will move into the space Italian Crust once occupied inside Heritage Crossing. For now, the pizzeria's closure adds one more name to a growing list of long-running, independently owned restaurants that didn't survive 2026's brutal operating climate.
