A new Mexican restaurant has taken over the back corner of Ephrata's Cloister Shopping Center, filling a storefront that sat empty for about a year after Isaac's pulled out. Agave Azul Mexican Grill has opened at 120 N. Reading Road, bringing tacos, burritos and fajitas to a stretch of town that lost a longtime lunch spot when Isaac's closed its doors there roughly a year ago.
The new restaurant has debuted in the Cloister Shopping Center, according to LancasterOnline, replacing the Isaac's that shut down at the same address. The space isn't right up front — the restaurant occupies a spot in the back portion of the shopping center, and diners can reach it either through a side door or by walking a long hallway in front, next to Family Dollar, per the same report. A commercial listing for the property from Bennett Williams Commercial had previously noted that Isaac's was vacating the location, calling it the end of what it described as many successful years for the restaurant there.
Agave Azul is owned by Jennifer Palacios, Alan Lamarca and Abiel Chavez, the same trio behind Rey Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Palmyra, LancasterOnline reports. The menu leans on the usual Mexican-restaurant staples — tacos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas and fajitas — along with salads and vegetarian options, mirroring what the owners already serve at their Palmyra location.
Owners Have Their Eye on a Full Bar
For now, Agave Azul is food-only, but that's not expected to last. The owners are seeking a liquor license so they can eventually serve alcohol at the restaurant, the outlet's report notes, though no timeline for approval has been laid out.
The move continues a pattern for Palacios, Lamarca and Chavez, who expanded into Ephrata after building up Rey Azteca in Palmyra. It also marks another case of a local, family-run concept growing by stepping directly into a departing chain's footprint rather than building new.
What Isaac's Left Behind
The Ephrata closure was part of a wider pullback for Isaac's. The chain announced plans to close three of its 13 locations, citing sales volume, proximity to other Isaac's restaurants and what it called the broader impact of inflation and interest costs, according to a separate LancasterOnline report. That shakeup left a hole in the Cloister Shopping Center that sat unfilled for about a year before Agave Azul moved in.
The shopping center itself sits at a busy corner, positioned at the signalized intersection of North Reading Road and Martin Avenue, a stretch that sees 35,242 vehicles per day, according to the Bennett Williams listing. Agave Azul's new neighbors in the plaza include Drayer, Family Dollar, The UPS Store, Subway and McDonald's, per the same listing, putting the restaurant in the middle of one of Ephrata's steadier commercial strips.
