Nine Austin residences are included in the 40th AIA Austin Homes Tour on Saturday and Sunday, October 24–25, 2026. The self-guided event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day, according to the Austin Chronicle listing. Eventbrite describes the tour as featuring new and renovated homes designed by local architects.

At Rutherford Place, a new entrance and old details

Restructure Studio says it joined two former entrances at Rutherford Place in Travis Heights to create one, while keeping the original arched front door, according to the studio’s project post. Coel said the 1935 house was built as a duplex and later converted into three units. CBS Austin reported that the current owners wanted to turn it into a single-family home for their growing family.

CBS Austin’s account of the renovation describes a set of changes that retained existing features while adapting the home for its owners. Original wood floors and salvaged door hardware remain, and the roof was redone with terracotta tiles chosen to match early photographs. The project also kept expansion to a rear staircase addition and replaced the old windows with more energy-efficient versions designed to resemble the originals, CBS Austin reported.

The same CBS Austin report says the renovation retained the rooms’ original footprints and the archway between them. The area that had served as a living room, dining room, and kitchen now forms an upstairs primary suite with a bedroom, closet, and bathroom.

A neighborhood example of changing home use

A separate house at 1204 Travis Heights Boulevard offers one example of changing residential use in the neighborhood: it was used as a rental after 1933 and converted to a duplex in 1949, according to City of Austin zoning records. The record concerns a different property from the 1935 Rutherford Place home.
