Albany’s Friday afternoon forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high near 58 degrees. Northwest winds around 17 mph could gust to 31 mph, making it feel sharper than the thermometer suggests. The National Weather Service forecast for Albany gives the afternoon outlook.
The National Weather Service Albany office is warning of an elevated risk for fire spread across the Hudson Valley, including Albany County, as dry fuels combine with gusty winds and falling humidity. Winds could gust between 25 and 35 mph during the afternoon, and the special weather statement remains in effect through 6 p.m. Friday.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Rain is not expected in Albany on Friday, but the wind will be the main weather story. Residents should use extra caution with machinery, matches and other ignition sources, and make sure cigarette butts are fully extinguished and disposed of safely.
Fall brings its own fire-season concerns: New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation says wildfire activity typically rises again as leaf drop and cured grasses add available fuels during dry, low-humidity conditions. Statewide data for 2010–2025 attributes 27% of wildfires to debris burning and 24% to campfires; smoking, equipment, railroads and other causes account for another 29%. DEC’s wildfire data and seasonal overview also note that loose leaves and leaf piles may not be burned, and local rules can be stricter than state regulations.
The National Weather Service classifies Albany’s alert as an elevated-risk statement, not a Red Flag Warning: the office says these statements cover enhanced fire-weather behavior below Red Flag criteria, which involve critical weather conditions alongside significantly dry fuels. The distinction helps put Friday’s alert in context—it calls for extra caution, but is not the agency’s highest fire-weather designation. NWS Albany’s fire-weather criteria explain the difference.
Friday night will turn partly cloudy and colder, with northwest winds easing and temperatures dropping to around 38 degrees. Saturday brings another sunny day with a high near 56, followed by a chilly low around 31 Saturday night, the latest National Weather Service forecast says.
Sunny Weekend Leads Into A Mild Week
Sunday should reach around 60 degrees under sunny skies, while Monday looks partly sunny with a high near 63. Tuesday is forecast to be mostly cloudy with a high near 64, followed by a partly sunny Wednesday with a high near 63, according to the National Weather Service.
Rain chances increase Wednesday night, with a 30% chance of showers, and continue Thursday, when showers are 50% likely. Thursday could reach about 65 degrees, but the chance of showers makes the dry stretch look increasingly temporary, the National Weather Service forecast shows.
