The patient accused Hedlund of inappropriate touching during an encounter at the clinic.
Hedlund's Account to Investigators
State patrol investigators interviewed Hedlund on September 25. He denied wrongdoing, according to the report.
He faces a third-degree sexual-assault charge.
What the Charge Means Under Nebraska Law
Under Nebraska Revised Statute § 28-320, third-degree sexual assault covers non-consensual sexual contact that does not cause serious personal injury, and it is classified as a Class I misdemeanor, according to the Liberty Law Group. A conviction carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both. FindLaw also discusses sexual contact under Nebraska Revised Statute § 28-318.
Hedlund has deep roots in the regional medical community. He has held active membership in the Nebraska Chiropractic Physicians Association representing District 5 in Northeast Nebraska since August 1999, per the association's own directory. Federal provider registry records also show Albion Family Chiropractic Center has operated under Nebraska chiropractic license number 1250 since August 2006, with Hedlund listed as owner and doctor, according to data compiled by NPIdb.org.
A Small Community With Limited Options
Albion is the county seat and largest municipality in Boone County, with a population of 1,699 recorded in the 2020 U.S. Census. Boone County itself has an estimated 5,355 residents spread across 686 square miles, making Albion the hub for commercial, governmental, and healthcare services across the county, according to the Nebraska Association of County Officials. In a rural area this size, a solo chiropractic practice like Hedlund's represents a significant share of available care — federal workforce data shows 98 percent of chiropractic practices in Nebraska are solo or small operations with fewer than 10 clinicians, per Healthcare Discovery AI.
Hedlund is scheduled to appear in Boone County Court on October 27.
