All lanes of Bardstown Road near Fegenbush Lane were closed Saturday night after a motor vehicle collision involving serious injuries, Louisville Metro Emergency Services reported. The closure affects a stretch of road in southeastern Louisville that has seen repeated deadly crashes in recent years.
The agency posted the alert shortly after midnight, stating plainly that “all lanes of Bardstown Road near Fegenbush Lane are closed due to a motor vehicle collision involving serious injuries,” according to a Louisville Metro Emergency Services
advisory. The notice did not specify how many people were injured, the severity of those injuries beyond the word “serious,” or when the road is expected to reopen. Louisville Metro Emergency Services also noted on its site that it is not monitored around the clock and urged anyone with an emergency to call 911 rather than rely on the alert feed.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
This is not the first time this particular stretch of Bardstown Road has made headlines for a deadly or serious crash. In a separate incident reported by wlky.com, a woman died after being struck by a vehicle on Bardstown Road near Fegenbush Lane. That crash happened around 6:30 a.m. in the 4300 block, and police said the woman was standing in the middle of the road when an eastbound vehicle could not avoid hitting her. She was taken to UofL Hospital, where she died from her injuries, and police said no one else was hurt and that the driver remained at the scene. The outlet reported the LMPD Traffic Unit was investigating.
The same stretch of road has produced other fatal incidents. Another report from the station described one person dead and another injured after a crash on Bardstown Road, with a portion of the roadway expected to stay closed while police reconstructed the scene. It is not clear from available information whether that incident and the woman's death above describe the same event or two separate crashes.
Pattern Extends Beyond This Intersection
Bardstown Road's danger for pedestrians is not confined to the Fegenbush Lane area. In June, a man was killed after being struck by two vehicles in Louisville's Buechel neighborhood, according to the Courier Journal. Officers were called to the 4500 block of Bardstown Road at 4:49 a.m. that day for a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian, and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later identified the man as 29-year-old Kevin Mutabazi.
Just weeks ago, a pedestrian was killed by two separate cars while crossing Bardstown Road at its intersection with Goldsmith Lane, with officers responding shortly after 6 a.m., per WLKY's earlier reporting. Years before that, a 2015 report from brokensidewalk.com described a pedestrian killed by a motorist along Fegenbush Lane near Bardstown Road for the third time in a single year, following the deaths of 61-year-old Padam Neopany in December 2014 and 74-year-old Carolyn Bertha Vest, who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in a blue Ford Escape. That same article noted the area had no crosswalks at the time and that much of Fegenbush Lane lacked sidewalks altogether.
City's Safety Goals Amid Ongoing Crashes
Louisville has an official transportation-safety initiative called Vision Zero Louisville, which the city describes as aiming for zero traffic deaths by 2050, according to information published by louisvilleky.gov. Whether that program has addressed the specific conditions along Fegenbush Lane or this section of Bardstown Road is not detailed in available city information.
No details have been confirmed about the cause of Saturday's crash, the number of people hurt, or when the road will reopen. Hoodline will update this story as Louisville Metro Emergency Services and police release additional information.
