Amazon has officially opened its massive fulfillment center in the Town of Niagara, and the company is now hiring for 1,000 full- and part-time roles paying between $21 and $23 an hour. The 3.1 million-square-foot facility represents a $550 million investment in Niagara County.
The hiring push comes with benefits including health insurance and tuition assistance, according to Buffalo Business First. Advertised starting wages range from $21 to $23 an hour. The Town of Niagara site is an Amazon fulfillment center.
A $550 Million Project
The project's price tag was reported at $550 million in November 2022. The five-story, 107-foot-tall building at 8995 Lockport Road sits on a 217-acre site and includes 55 loading docks, 414 tractor-trailer parking stalls, and 1,755 employee parking spaces, per specifications reported by WGRZ.
Buffalo Rising described the site as the region's second-largest construction project, behind the Bills stadium.
Public Incentives and Utility Support
Getting Amazon to build in Niagara County came with a steep public price tag. In August, the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency granted Amazon an additional $3 million in sales tax exemptions tied to the rising construction costs, while the company gave up $3.5 million in mortgage recording exemptions — bringing the total local incentive package to roughly $123.4 million, as detailed by CNHI.
The facility also benefits from state-level utility support: the New York Power Authority board approved roughly 10.7 megawatts of low-cost hydroelectric power from the Niagara Power Project for the site back in March 2023, according to Investigative Post.
From Rejected Grand Island Plan to Airport-Adjacent Build
The Niagara site wasn't Amazon's first proposed location. The company originally proposed a regional fulfillment center on Grand Island, where town residents opposed the plan, Buffalo Rising reports. Amazon later selected the parcel north of Niagara Falls International Airport.
The move has reshaped the airport corridor in ways beyond the warehouse itself. Local economic development leaders noted in February 2025 that the Lockport Road site, combined with a nearby $41.5 million Saint-Gobain expansion, generated nearly $600 million in private investment around the airport, according to WBFO.
Amazon's Lancaster Closure
The Niagara opening arrives just months after Amazon shut down a different Western New York operation. In February, the company announced the closure of its sortation center on Walden Avenue in Lancaster, affecting 542 positions as it consolidated regional workflow into newer automated facilities like the Niagara site, according to Buffalo Business First. Impacted Lancaster workers were offered transfer opportunities across nearby Amazon sites.
The warehouse is open and hiring, with Amazon moving to fill the 1,000 positions it has advertised at the site.
