Amneal Pharmaceuticals is planning a more than $240 million expansion of its manufacturing operations in Piscataway, a project the company says will create more than 330 full-time jobs and reshape eight buildings into a single integrated production campus. The investment has qualified the drugmaker for a $60.56 million state award spread over five years, part of a broader push to grow pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity in New Jersey.

The expansion represents more than $240 million in eligible capital investment over three years, according to the New Jersey Business & Industry Association. The New Jersey Economic Development Authority board approved approximately $60 million in tax credits for the project under the Next New Jersey Manufacturing Program, the same report states. Amneal's qualification for the $60.56 million award over five years was confirmed by the NJEDA, according to that reporting.

Eight Buildings, One Integrated Campus

The plan calls for renovating eight buildings into a single integrated manufacturing campus that will support production, quality control and logistics under one roof, per the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. The project includes new investments in manufacturing capabilities for transdermal patches, biosimilars and pharmaceutical injectables, the trade association's report notes. Those additions are meant to expand Amneal's domestic manufacturing capacity and strengthen the U.S. pharmaceutical supply chain, according to the same account.

Company co-chief executives Chirag Patel and Chintu Patel said Amneal is making a significant long-term investment in domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing. The brothers, who founded Amneal in Paterson in 2002, said the expansion will increase capacity to produce complex medicines and create high-quality jobs, the trade association's report states. The expansion is also expected to support growth in Amneal's affordable medicines business, including complex generics, women's health products and new product launches, and to advance the company's biosimilars portfolio.

State Officials Tout Jobs and Industry Leadership

Governor Mikie Sherrill said Amneal's investment and expansion will support good-paying jobs and reinforce New Jersey's leadership in pharmaceutical manufacturing, per the same report. NJEDA official Evan Weiss said the Next New Jersey Manufacturing Program strengthens the state's manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors, bolsters the economy and drives job growth, according to the association's coverage. Amneal exceeds the program's minimum investment and job creation requirements, that reporting adds.

Amneal, headquartered in Bridgewater, delivers more than 160 million prescriptions annually and markets more than 300 generic, specialty and biosimilar medicines, according to the trade group's report. The Piscataway project adds to a state manufacturing sector that already leads the nation: New Jersey ranks first nationally in pharmaceutical manufacturing employment and in FDA-registered manufacturing sites, according to NJBIZ. More than 40,000 people work in pharmaceutical manufacturing statewide, and the broader life sciences workforce exceeds 127,000 employees, the outlet reports.

Part of a Broader Building Boom

New Jersey has added roughly 1.5 million square feet of new contract development and manufacturing organization and biomanufacturing space since 2021, NJBIZ reports. Other recent projects include Cellares' 118,000-square-foot Smart Factory in Bridgewater, which opened in 2024 to scale cell therapy production through robotics and automation. Enzene Biosciences, meanwhile, opened a $50 million biopharmaceutical facility in Hopewell in 2025 and plans to grow its workforce from 50 to approximately 300 employees as operations expand, according to the same report.

Hopewell-based BeOne Medicines US Manufacturing Co. also received a Next New Jersey Manufacturing award for its operations there, the state's economic development authority has said. The Next New Jersey Manufacturing Program itself is designed to incentivize in-state manufacturing investments and job creation through a tax credit structure meant to drive investment and spur hiring at facilities that establish or expand their physical presence in the state, according to legislative bill language from the New Jersey Legislature.
