A 34-year-old Anaheim man came home from work early last Saturday and allegedly found another man in bed with his wife — a discovery that ended with a fatal stabbing and a murder charge. Ismael Pinedalopez now faces one felony count of murder along with a weapon-use sentencing enhancement in the death of 28-year-old Nicholas Garcia.
Police Called To North Pine Street Home
According to NBC Los Angeles, Anaheim police responded to a report of a stabbing on Oct. 24 at a residence on North Pine Street near W. Wilhelmina Street. Prosecutors say Pinedalopez had returned home early from work and discovered Garcia wearing only his underwear in bed with his wife. Officers arriving at the home found Garcia's body inside the bedroom he shared with his wife and their 2-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son, the outlet reports.
Police said Pinedalopez used a pocketknife in the attack. Pinedalopez's wife and children were not injured, according to the same report. An Anaheim Police Department daily arrest log lists Ismael Pineda-Lopez as taken into custody that same morning, Oct. 24, at 6:46 a.m., citing California Penal Code section 187(A), the statute governing murder.
Murder Charge Carries Steep Potential Sentence
Pinedalopez faces one felony count of murder, as well as a sentencing enhancement for personally using a weapon in connection with Garcia's death, both attributed to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. If convicted on all counts, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison. He was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
California's penal code, as cited in legislative text, states that a person guilty of second-degree murder shall be punished by 15 years to life in state prison, though it is unclear which degree of murder Pinedalopez has been charged with based on the available reporting.
Not The First Case Of Its Kind In California
Love-triangle violence involving a spouse's romantic partner has surfaced elsewhere in California before. In Sacramento, Arturo Hernandez was sentenced in July to 16 years to life in state prison by Judge Alyson Lewis after a jury convicted him of second-degree murder for killing his estranged wife's boyfriend, Anthony Freas, according to KTLA. That 2017 case saw Hernandez break into the apartment where the couple was sleeping and stab Freas multiple times before fleeing; he evaded capture for nearly five years until Mexican authorities and FBI agents arrested him in July 2023.
A similar case unfolded this past weekend in Georgia, far from Anaheim but striking in its parallels. Daniel Roman-Cortez allegedly told investigators he shot Pablo Gutierrez-Gallegos because Gutierrez-Gallegos was sleeping with his wife, according to People. Gutierrez-Gallegos was pronounced dead following the Oct. 25 shooting in Doraville, and two bystanders inside a nearby restaurant were hurt by flying glass. Roman-Cortez now faces a murder charge, six counts of aggravated assault and a charge of criminal damage to property, and he was being held without bond at the DeKalb County Jail with no attorney listed in jail records as of Tuesday.
The Anaheim Police Department maintains a monthly crime-statistics page describing itself as offering snapshots of public safety activity, response times and enforcement across the city, though it does not break out trend data specific to stabbings or homicides. The department also runs a crime-mapping tool through the city's open-data site for residents tracking incidents by location.
