Two Apex homeowners ended up trapped in their own front yard Wednesday evening after driving their car straight into the front of their Baberton Drive townhome. Police and firefighters responded to the scene at about 6:30 p.m., where crews found the vehicle lodged against the house the driver and passenger themselves own.
Firefighters stabilized the car before freeing the driver and passenger and escorting them to safety, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. Both suffered only minor injuries, and the home itself was unoccupied at the time of the crash, meaning no one else was inside when the car struck the structure. The Apex Fire Department reported the incident in a Wednesday Facebook post, per the same account.
What Officials Have Said So Far
A town representative told the newspaper that preliminary details suggested the crash was accidental, and that no charges are expected to come out of the incident. Beyond that, officials have been tight-lipped: the fire department did not disclose what caused the crash or how much damage the home sustained, the report notes.
That silence came with a pointed request. The department said not everything shared online about the crash is accurate or complete, and it encouraged residents to check its own Facebook page or the Apex Police Department's page before drawing conclusions, rather than relying on secondhand chatter. The department also said it appreciated the community's support and understanding as the situation unfolded, per the same report.
Not Apex's First Car-Into-Building Scare
Baberton Drive's crash is far from the only time a vehicle has ended up somewhere it shouldn't in Apex. In May 2024, a driver crashed into Fire Station 1 after authorities said the car hit multiple light posts and lost control, a case that ended in a DWI charge, according to WRAL. And in December 2024, a stolen truck slammed into an Apex coin shop; the fire department said nobody was inside, though the structural damage was severe enough that town officials condemned the building, the Raleigh News & Observer reported separately.
Unlike those earlier incidents, Wednesday's crash appears headed toward a quiet resolution, with officials pointing to an accident rather than a crime. For now, the exact cause of the crash and the cost of the damage to the Baberton Drive townhome remain unknown, and the Apex Fire Department has not indicated when, or whether, further details will be released.
