Thanksgiving morning in Apollo Beach means one thing for thousands of Waterset-area residents: lacing up for the Waterset Turkey Trot. The 11th annual race returns on Thursday, November 26, 2026, with a chip-timed 5K, a kids' fun run and a virtual option, all built around the community's tradition of funneling registration dollars straight into four local public schools.
According to Osprey Observer, the event will once again benefit Doby Elementary, Eisenhower Middle School, East Bay High School and Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy. The 5K starts at approximately 8 a.m. near the lakeside at 7250 Parkshore Dr. in Apollo Beach, with the route running north and south on Waterset Blvd., while the kids' fun run — offering 1-mile, half-mile and mini-distance options — kicks off around 9 a.m., the outlet reports.
This year's race also comes with a notable rule change. Per RunSignup, organizers have instituted a strict ban on pets anywhere on the course, including leashed animals and pets riding in strollers, a decision attributed to safety concerns stemming from past incidents and the race's growing participant numbers. Strollers for kids, however, remain welcome, the station's report notes, and the race continues to use chip timing that starts the moment runners cross the starting line.
A Decade of Fundraising for South Hillsborough Schools
The Turkey Trot's charitable track record has grown alongside Waterset itself. The 2023 race drew more than 1,200 runners and raised over $36,000, allowing developers to hand individual checks of more than $9,200 to each of the four beneficiary schools, according to Waterset. The year before that, the 2022 event brought out over 1,000 participants and raised $30,000, distributing more than $7,000 to each beneficiary school principal for campus improvements, per reporting at the time.
Those contributions have translated into specific, visible upgrades on campus. Osprey Observer's earlier coverage detailed media center updates at Doby Elementary, office vinyl glass wraps at Eisenhower Middle, new science lab stools at East Bay High, and new soccer goals for Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy — the kind of tangible improvements that don't typically come out of a general school district budget. Dorothy C. York Innovation Academy itself opened in 2022 as a public PreK-8 magnet school and is an authorized International Baccalaureate World School, according to Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Looking at the full decade, Waterset reports that the Turkey Trot has raised a cumulative total of more than $46,000 for local Apollo Beach area schools leading into this year's running. Local running club FishHawk Road Runners, which assists with the race's technical setup and execution, received a $1,000 contribution from developers in 2024 to support operations, the same report notes.
Registration, Packet Pickup and Shirt Deadlines
Registration for the Turkey Trot remains open online through November 26, 2026, per Osprey Observer's reporting, and 5K participants will receive a race bib, race shirt and finisher's medal, while kids' fun run entrants get a bib, shirt and medal of their own. Both the 5K and kids' fun run shirts are dri-fit styles available in adult and youth sizes, though organizers caution that shirt availability is not guaranteed for anyone who registers after November 4, 2026.
Runners should also expect price increases built into the registration timeline: 5K entry fees rise on November 1, 2026, and again on November 23, 2026, while kids' fun run pricing increases on November 1 as well. Early race packet pickup is scheduled for Wednesday, November 25, 2026, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Landing Club and Café, located at 7012 Sail View Lane in Apollo Beach, according to TriFind. Those registered for the virtual 5K option are not guaranteed to receive their race packets before Thanksgiving morning.
A Local Tradition Tied to a National Holiday Phenomenon
The Waterset race is hosted inside a 1,600-acre master-planned community in Apollo Beach developed by Brookfield Properties and North America Sekisui House, which features more than 14 miles of walking trails and 10 onsite parks, according to North America Sekisui House. That network of trails and parks gives the growing neighborhood plenty of room for a flat, family-friendly 5K route each holiday morning.
The timing also places Waterset's race within a much larger national pattern. Thanksgiving Day is the single most popular day for organized running in the United States, with a record 1.33 million registered participants taking part in 1,056 races nationwide in 2025, according to Silent Sports Magazine. For Apollo Beach families, the Waterset Turkey Trot offers a hyper-local entry point into that holiday ritual, one where the entry fee doubles as a donation to the classroom down the street.
