How Colorado's Senior Alert Works
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation says a Senior Alert requires the missing person to be at least 60, have a locally verified impaired mental condition and pose a credible threat to health and safety. Medication dependence alone does not establish that those criteria are met. When a case meets the criteria, local law enforcement notifies the bureau, which starts the alert activation procedure and forwards information to participating media outlets.
Colorado also funds a separate tool for local governments seeking to locate people at risk of wandering. A 2022 law expanded the CBI-administered grant program to support local recovery programs, including ones that use devices to electronically locate participants. The program is distinct from the Senior Alert system; the law does not establish that Arapahoe County received a grant or that Deartola used a tracking device. The law’s summary describes the program and its purpose.
Senior Alerts are a recurring part of Colorado’s missing-person response: the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said they make up roughly one-third to one-half of the alerts it issues annually. As of September 30, 2025, the bureau had issued 46 Senior Alerts that year, more than the combined total of Medina, Endangered Missing and AMBER Alerts at that point.
No further details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance have been released. Anyone with information on Deartola's whereabouts is asked to call the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center at 303-795-4711.
