A shoplifting run at the Jefferson Square Safeway in West Seattle turned into an armed robbery investigation Monday afternoon after the suspect pulled out a handgun to fend off store security and flee. Police are now searching for the man, described as white, about 40 years old, wearing a black jacket, light jeans and blue sneakers, and carrying a black handgun.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. at the Jefferson Square Safeway, according to West Seattle Blog, which reported that what began as a routine shoplift escalated when the suspect flashed the weapon at store security to make his getaway. As of the site's report, the suspect had not been located.
Not the First Time Security Has Clashed With a Shoplifter at This Store
This isn't the first time a shoplifting attempt at this exact Safeway has spiraled into violence. In January 2025, a 42-year-old man was jailed after a shoplift-turned-robbery at the same Jefferson Square store, per the same outlet's earlier report. In that case, police said the suspect threw an employee into a shelf, hit a customer, then took items and left — and officers arrested him roughly half an hour later walking near 35th Avenue and Avalon Way, where they recovered a toy guitar along with items stolen from the store.
It's unclear whether Monday's incident is connected to that earlier case or to any other prior activity at the location; the two reports describe separate events months apart. West Seattle has also seen other armed confrontations tied to retail and roadside crime, including an armed robbery investigated by Seattle police at a West Seattle gas station in March, where four masked men driving a stolen Hyundai Sonata were involved, according to the SPD Blotter.
Retail Theft Cases Are Climbing Countywide
The Safeway incident lands amid a broader rise in retail crime prosecutions across King County. Prosecutors charged 640 felony economic and property crime cases in 2025, the highest total since 2019, up from 506 in 2024 and 367 in 2023, according to Axios Seattle. A prosecutor's office spokesperson attributed part of that increase to more cases being referred to prosecutors by police rather than solely to more crime occurring.
Among the cases cited in that reporting was one defendant suspected of 24 separate thefts over 55 days stretching from North Seattle to Federal Way. The outlet also noted that prosecutors recently filed three felony organized retail theft cases tied to Ulta Beauty stores in North Seattle. Health and beauty products, fragrances, electronics and copper were flagged as frequent targets because they're easy to carry off and resell quickly, and the report cited Washington Retail Association data showing 54% of retailers nationally have seen increases in repeat-offender theft.
No arrest has been announced in Monday's Jefferson Square case, and key details — including what, if anything, was taken from the store and whether anyone was hurt — have not been released. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police as the search for the armed suspect continues.
