Dallas police officers opened fire on an armed suspect Wednesday afternoon after a confrontation along the southbound lanes of South R.L. Thornton Freeway near 10th Street. No officers were injured in the encounter, while the suspect was struck and taken to a local hospital with injuries that have not yet been announced.
According to FOX 4 News, the shooting unfolded in the 400 block of the freeway, with preliminary information indicating officers encountered an armed suspect who confronted them before they discharged their firearms. Dallas police commanders and public information officers responded to the scene, and the department said in a post from Dallas Police Dept
that a media staging area was set up in the 900 block of Church Street as the investigation got underway.
As is often the case in the immediate aftermath of an officer-involved shooting, much remains unknown. The suspect's identity, their medical condition and the exact sequence of events that led to the confrontation remain unclear.
A Violent Night Along the Same Stretch of Freeway
Wednesday's shooting came just hours after a separate, unrelated emergency on the same corridor. At 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dallas police responded to the 500 block of the South R.L. Thornton Freeway service road near 10th Street, where an SUV struck and seriously injured a pedestrian in the roadway, who was expected to survive, according to Inciding. The incidents occurred hours apart and blocks from one another.
The stretch of freeway has drawn repeated police attention in recent weeks. Hoodline has reported on a masked robbery at an Oak Cliff beer store on September 9 along the same South R.L. Thornton Freeway corridor.
How Dallas Police Oversee Use of Force
The Dallas Police Department's Special Investigations Unit handles officer-involved shootings, and the department publicly archives officer-involved shooting data. Officer-involved shootings are also subject to review by the Dallas County District Attorney's Office Special Investigations Unit, according to Dallas City Hall.
Part of a Broader Pattern in 2026
Wednesday's shooting is not the first officer-involved shooting for Dallas police this year. Hoodline previously reported on a knife threat that led to a shooting on February 9 in the 5100 block of Lemmon Avenue, after officers responded to reports of a suspect armed with a knife.
No further details on the suspect's condition had been released following Wednesday's shooting.
