A three-alarm fire damaged a home on Bay Boulevard in Atlantic Beach before dawn, sending one firefighter to the hospital with burns and displacing the family who lived there. The fire broke out around 4 a.m.
The home's occupants got out safely after smoke detectors alerted them to the danger, according to News12 Long Island. Officials reported no other injuries among residents, though one firefighter was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of burns suffered while battling the flames.
Roof Collapses as Crews Fight the Blaze
Portions of the home's roof collapsed while firefighters worked to control the blaze, News12 reported.
News12 reported that the Long Beach Fire Department said more than 150 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
Cause Still Under Investigation
The cause of the fire has not been determined and remains under investigation, the report notes. No further details on what sparked the blaze have been released.
The Red Cross also responded to assist the displaced family, according to News12. The fire's cause remains under investigation.
Fire injury context and recovery support
The available national benchmark does not show a multiyear trend for New York State or Nassau County. As broad context, the U.S. Fire Administration reports that the 2023 national average for residential-structure-fire casualties was 5.8 deaths and 19.7 injuries per 1,000 fires.
The American Red Cross's Long Island service area says its disaster-response services can include shelter, food, clothing and emotional support at no cost. That general description does not specify what assistance this family received or detail its response process in this case.
