Atlantic City Public Schools pulled back the curtain Monday morning on $30 million worth of facility upgrades spanning all 11 of its school buildings, with Superintendent La'Quetta Small hosting journalists on a tour that began at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Complex. The showcase followed a summer of construction that touched everything from science labs to locker rooms to media centers.

According to 6abc Philadelphia, the tour actually began at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School Complex, where new doors, flooring, locker rooms and even a television studio were among the additions highlighted for visiting press. Other schools in the district saw their libraries and lunchrooms refreshed as part of the same push, the station reported. As reported by The Press of Atlantic City, the King Complex renovations also included a new E-Sports room stocked with Nintendo Switch consoles, a modernized media center, renovated main offices, and restored lobby flooring.

Uptown Complex Gets a Science Lab Overhaul

At the Uptown School Complex, crews rewired and equipped a science laboratory with new electrical systems, specialized lab tables, and modernized overhead lighting, per the same Press of Atlantic City account. Those lab updates were bundled with broader renovations to administrative offices and cafeteria space at the complex, the outlet noted.

The upgrades weren't limited to flashy new additions. At Atlantic City High School, the district renovated restrooms that had been largely unchanged since the building opened in 1994 and added a new football locker room. High School Principal Dr. Constance Days-Chapman said renovating the aging facilities mattered for student pride, according to the district's own account.

Elementary Schools Catch Up on Building Basics

Across the district's elementary schools, crews tackled less glamorous but essential work: replacement heating boilers, refurbished gymnasium floors, playground improvements, roofing repairs, new student lockers, and upgraded security entrance vestibules, according to WPG Talk Radio. Some of the work took place during summer break, while students were away.

Atlantic City High School's reach extends beyond city limits. Under formal sending/receiving agreements, the school educates teenagers from four neighboring Atlantic County municipalities — Brigantine, Longport, Margate City, and Ventnor City — none of which operate their own public high schools, per Wikipedia. That regional role means the locker room and restroom overhaul at the 1994-era building carries weight well beyond Atlantic City proper.

A Shift in State Monitoring

Atlantic City Public Schools ended roughly a decade of state monitoring after resolving conditions that had prompted oversight.

The district's renovation work covered 11 schools.
