Austin police swarmed the area around McCallum High School on Friday after witnesses reported a man carrying a weapon near the campus, triggering a secure status at the school and several others nearby. The lockdown-style measure was lifted around 5:40 p.m., but not before investigators detained multiple people for questioning.
According to KVUE, the Austin Police Department responded to reports of a man with a weapon after being called to the 5500 block of North Lamar Boulevard, a block from the school. Witnesses told officers the man may have been involved in a fight with some students, though police have not released further details confirming what happened during the altercation.
Authorities detained several people for questioning as officers worked to sort out what occurred, but the exact number detained was unclear and their identities were not made public, per the same report. McCallum High School and other nearby campuses were placed into secure status while police investigated, a protocol schools use to restrict movement in and out of buildings without a full lockdown.
Dismissal Delayed as Secure Status Dragged On
The secure status disrupted the end of the school day for students at McCallum and the surrounding campuses. Austin Independent School District told KXAN that McCallum was briefly placed on Secure status and that dismissal of students was delayed Friday evening following the nearby altercation. By about 5:40 p.m., the secure status had been lifted and the campus was safe.
Second Major Disruption at McCallum This Month
Friday's incident marks the second time in under a month that McCallum has seen a significant security response. On Oct. 6, the campus was placed under a secure hold during fifth period after officials received a potential bomb threat, according to the McCallum Shield. That hold was lifted at approximately 12:05 p.m. after K-9 units searched the entire building, inside and out, and found no suspicious items.
That October bomb threat was itself an echo of an earlier scare. During the spring of the 2024-2025 school year, an anonymous caller used a voice-disguising tool to phone the McCallum office and threaten to shoot up and bomb the campus, the student newspaper reported. That hold lasted more than two hours and was lifted only after three separate K-9 sweeps determined the school was safe.
Part of a Pattern Across Austin Campuses
Friday's response adds to a string of security incidents at Austin-area schools this year. A student was found with a loaded gun at Anderson High School in March, prompting a brief hold, according to a report from CBS Austin. In January, the FBI warned Austin ISD of a social media threat targeting three schools, KXAN reported separately.
No additional information has been released about whether a weapon was recovered near McCallum on Friday or whether any of those detained now face charges. Austin police have not provided a detailed public accounting of the altercation witnesses described, and the identities of those questioned remain unknown.
