Austin starts Thursday mostly cloudy and muggy at about 72 degrees, but the city is headed for one more summer-like afternoon before fall finally makes a convincing entrance. Temperatures should climb to 93 degrees at Austin Camp Mabry and 92 at Austin-Bergstrom, followed by a cold front arriving around midnight with showers and much stronger winds.
Thursday Brings One More Hot Afternoon
Skies should turn mostly sunny through the day, with light southeast winds ahead of the front. The National Weather Service says the heat will be the main story for Austin, though humidity will remain noticeable ahead of the front.
Thursday night brings a 50% chance of rain showers. A cold-air wind surge will accompany the front.
Friday Looks Cooler, Windier And A Little Damp
The front should move through Austin around midnight or shortly afterward, bringing a chance of showers before 7 a.m. Friday. Rain should taper off as the day turns partly sunny, but the high will struggle to reach 70 degrees while north winds increase to 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
That sharp temperature drop is the real forecast headline: Friday will be roughly 20 degrees cooler than Thursday. Austin’s current forecast has no local watches, warnings or advisories, although a separate Flood Watch is posted for Val Verde County, where heavier rain is expected west of the city.
Weekend Offers A Proper Fall Reset
Friday night should be blustery, with a low near 50 and continued north winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Fewer clouds are expected by Saturday morning.
Sunday should be pleasantly cool. A warming trend is expected to begin Monday, so Austin’s sweater weather window may be brief but welcome.
