Babe's Pie Co. plans to open a permanent storefront at 1413 Westminster St. in Providence's West End after Sin Desserts closes its doors for good on October 31. The pastry shop, run by chef Mar Keller and business partner Abby Lofberg, will occupy the former Sin Desserts space.
As reported by The Providence Journal, Babe's Pie Co. is bringing treats to Providence. Luxmoore built Sin Desserts into an award-winning custom cake shop and cafe over 24 years in the neighborhood, a run that What's Going On RI notes ends permanently on October 31.
Babe's Pie Co. plans to open its permanent Providence storefront in spring 2027, according to Edible Rhody. That gives the West End several months without a dedicated pastry shop at the address, though the timeline at least answers when locals can expect the new storefront to open.
Who's Behind the Pies
Babe's Pie Co. is co-owned by pastry chef Mar Keller and life partner Abby Lofberg, who handles business operations, marketing, and other non-baking management, the same Edible Rhody profile notes. Keller holds a pastry arts degree from Johnson & Wales University and previously worked as a certified sommelier and bartender before turning to pastry full time, per the outlet's reporting.
The bakery's approach is notably hands-on: Babe's maintains a strictly scratch-made production process, skipping frozen or pre-cut fruit entirely and running on a weeklong preparation cycle ahead of weekend sales, the same account states. Beyond whole and sliced seasonal pies, the shop also bakes cardamom buns — a nod to Lofberg's Swedish heritage — along with hand pies, galettes, cookies, and bread pudding.
From Pop-Up to Permanent Address
Before landing a storefront of its own, Babe's Pie Co. operated out of a commercial kitchen at 258 Kenyon Ave. in Pawtucket, selling its goods through local pop-ups at Stock Culinary Goods and Moniker Brewery, according to the bakery's own account corroborated by Edible Rhody. That path took Babe's from local pop-ups toward a storefront.
Edible Rhody describes Keller as queer and trans.
For now, West End residents are watching a long-running neighborhood fixture wind down even as a newer, locally grown business prepares to take its place at the same address. The specific renovation plans for the café space, and whether Babe's Pie Co. will keep operating its Pawtucket commissary kitchen once the Providence storefront opens, remain open questions as the spring 2027 target approaches.
