A baby goat slipped out of a nearby yard and ran onto the playground at DiChiaro School on Bronxville Road in Yonkers, where it chased students. The chaos unfolded Thursday afternoon, Oct. 8, and ended with police officers cornering the animal while students cheered them on.

The young goat escaped through a fence from a neighboring property before wandering onto the school's playground, according to Daily Voice. Officers were called to the school to round up the runaway animal, and after some maneuvering, the goat was eventually surrounded and taken into custody as kids cheered from the sidelines.

Students Root for the Officers Mid-Chase

As officers closed in on the goat, students got in on the action themselves, shouting “Let's go cops!” while the scene played out in front of them. The goat was captured, ending the chase.

Once the goat was secured, the animal was returned to its home, where another goat was waiting, according to Daily Voice. The reunion closed out an afternoon that briefly turned a routine recess into an impromptu barnyard rescue.

Emergency Service Unit Pitches In Beyond the Chase

The job didn't end once the goat was back where it belonged. Members of the department's Emergency Service Unit also helped repair the damaged fence that had let the animal escape in the first place, as reported by Daily Voice, closing off the gap that started the whole ordeal.

The Emergency Service Unit also demonstrated its trucks and equipment to students, as noted by News 12, turning the unusual afternoon into an extra bit of show-and-tell for the kids at DiChiaro School. The Yonkers Police Department described the full sequence of events on Wednesday, Oct. 14, nearly a week after the goat's brief run through the playground, Daily Voice reported.
