Tap & Vine has permanently closed its Stonecrest restaurant at 7828 Rea Road in Ballantyne, ending a four-year run at the Stone Crest at Piper Glen shopping plaza. The restaurant's exact last day of operation remains unclear, and no reason for the closure has been given.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the Rea Road location was listed as “permanently closed,” and the Stonecrest restaurant was no longer listed as a location on Tap & Vine's own website. The outlet reported it had reached out to owner Joe Maus for more information and was awaiting a response. A Reddit user had reportedly posted about the closure earlier in the week, describing the restaurant as closed for good.

A Yelp listing for the address also marks the Stonecrest location as closed, matching what customers have been noticing online. The restaurant had offered a varied list of wines by the glass alongside burgers, salads, tacos and signature tapas, according to the same report.

From Civetta to Tap & Vine

Tap & Vine debuted in Ballantyne in 2022 after moving into the former Civetta Italian Kitchen + Bar space on Rea Road, the Observer's reporting states. The concept had been expanding around the Charlotte region in the years prior, with Charlotte Business Journal noting that Maus' Tap & Vine was also headed to Quail Corners in south Charlotte around that same period.

Back in 2023, Maus talked up the brand's trajectory, saying, “We just feel like there's a need for that in Charlotte and that's why we're growing it.” At the time, the comment reflected a company on the upswing, with new locations rolling out across the metro area.

Two Other Locations Still Open

Despite the Ballantyne closure, Tap & Vine still has locations in Indian Trail and Quail Hollow in south Charlotte, both of which remain open. The Indian Trail restaurant sits at 6443 Old Monroe Road, while the Quail Hollow spot is located at 8426 Park Road in Charlotte, per the same Observer account. Tap & Vine's website describes the brand as having three locations in the Charlotte area, though the Stonecrest address has since dropped off that list.

For now, the fate of the Ballantyne storefront and any further explanation from ownership remain open questions. Diners who frequented the Rea Road spot for its tapas and wine-by-the-glass menu will still find the Tap & Vine name alive in Indian Trail and Quail Hollow, even as the Stone Crest at Piper Glen plaza loses one of its longtime tenants.
