Baltimore is headed for a sharp bout of weather whiplash, with Wednesday bringing sunny skies and a high near 88 before storms and a dramatic weekend cooldown. The city starts the day around 66 degrees, but temperatures will climb quickly through the afternoon.

Record Warmth Builds Wednesday

West winds of 3 to 9 mph will accompany mostly sunny conditions, and the high could challenge October records of 87 degrees in Washington and 86 degrees at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. A few locations in the region could even reach 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm chance increases after 5 p.m., with showers or thunderstorms possible Wednesday evening and a better chance between roughly 8 and 9 p.m. The overall chance of rain Wednesday night is 30%, but a few stronger storms are possible in the broader region, mainly west of the Blue Ridge.

Rain And Wind Return Before A Chilly Weekend

Thursday will feel much different, with rain showers likely after 10 a.m., a high near 67 and rainfall totals between a tenth and a quarter-inch. Friday briefly rebounds to around 82 degrees, but showers and thunderstorms are likely as a powerful cold front crosses the area, bringing potentially gusty winds.

By Saturday, the high is expected to reach only 57 degrees with northwest winds around 17 mph, followed by a clear night near 41. Frost is likely across much of the region, while freezing temperatures could reach areas outside immediate downtown Baltimore; Sunday should turn sunny and calmer with a high near 62.
