Worcester is getting its first taste of baseball's most unconventional spectacle. Polar Park, home of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, will host two Banana Ball games on July 30 and 31, 2027, bringing the fast-paced, rule-bending version of the sport to Central Massachusetts for the first time.
The Worcester Red Sox announced the dates, which will feature the league's reigning champion Texas Tailgaters squaring off against the Firefighters, according to MassLive. The Tailgaters earned their title with a 2-1 win over the Savannah Bananas in the inaugural Banana Bowl Championship on October 10, a game that drew a sellout crowd of 41,000 fans to Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., according to Baseball America. Tailgaters player Kyle Martin was named tournament MVP after hitting a two-run home run in the eighth inning; the teams remained tied 1-1 after nine innings, and the Tailgaters won in a Showdown, per the same outlet.
Fans hoping to snag seats at Polar Park will need to enter a ticket lottery, which stays open through 11:59 p.m. on October 31, per MassLive. Those selected in the random drawing will be contacted with instructions for purchasing tickets, with standard seats starting at $35 and meet-and-greet packages starting at $125, the outlet reports.
A Six-Team League Built for Spectacle
Banana Ball traces back to 2018, when the Savannah Bananas first experimented with the format before playing the first official Banana Ball game in 2020, per MassLive. The concept has since grown into the Banana Ball Championship League, a six-team circuit that according to MassLive played 190 games across 45 states and drew more than 3 million fans in 2026, per figures attributed to the Worcester Red Sox. The league includes teams like the Party Animals, the Loco Beach Coconuts, and the Indianapolis Clowns alongside the Tailgaters and Firefighters headed to Worcester.
The Banana Ball Championship League formally launched as a six-team professional circuit in 2026, and its reach extends well past the ballpark. Games stream for free on YouTube, backed by a global social media following exceeding 35 million, according to Minor League Baseball.
Rules That Throw Traditional Baseball Out
What sets Banana Ball apart isn't just the showmanship — it's the rulebook. Walks, bunts, and mound visits are all banned, and batters who draw ball four must sprint around the bases while the entire defense scrambles to touch the ball before it becomes live again, per MassLive. Fans in the stands even get in on the action: catching a foul ball in the air records an out for the batting team.
Under the league's official 11-rule system, managers get one Golden Batter Rule per game, letting them insert any hitter into the lineup out of order at a crucial moment, according to The Daily Iowan. Fans also receive one official call challenge per game. Scoring itself is unconventional, with teams earning a single point for whichever side scores the most runs in a given inning. Games carry a strict two-hour time limit, and any contest still tied when the clock runs out heads to a Showdown Tiebreaker, where a lone batter faces a stripped-down defense that eventually shrinks to just a pitcher and catcher, according to bananaball.com.
Worcester's Deep Roots in the Sport
The Banana Ball stop lands in a city with genuine baseball pedigree. Worcester's professional baseball legacy dates back to the National League's Worcester Worcesters, who played from 1880 to 1882, and it was there that pitcher Lee Richmond threw the first recorded perfect game in Major League Baseball history on June 12, 1880, according to Stadium Journey. Central Massachusetts went decades without affiliated professional baseball before the WooSox arrived in 2021.
Polar Park itself opened in May 2021 at a cost of $159 million and carries an official seating capacity of 9,508 — a nod to Central Massachusetts' 508 area code. The ballpark is owned by the City of Worcester and replaced McCoy Stadium in Rhode Island as Boston's primary Triple-A affiliate venue.
Part of a Rapidly Expanding Tour
Worcester's booking fits into a much larger wave of growth for Banana Ball. The tour's footprint across Massachusetts has climbed steadily, launching at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton in August 2023, playing sold-out dates at Fenway Park in 2024 and 2025, and filling the 65,000-seat Gillette Stadium in Foxborough in August 2026, according to CBS News.
Beyond Worcester, the 2027 New England swing also includes an August 20 and 21 two-game series at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine, pitting the Indianapolis Clowns against the Loco Beach Coconuts. The full 2027 schedule, unveiled during a live broadcast on October 15, spans 75 cities and 79 stadiums, including 23 Major League Baseball ballparks and 10 football stadiums, plus the league's first international stops in Mexico and Canada, according to Baseball America. That international expansion includes series in Monterey and Tijuana, Mexico, as well as Toronto and Winnipeg, Canada.
