Nine Third Avenue bars are set to take part in Bay Ridge’s annual Pumpkin Roll on Oct. 24, bringing a Halloween pub crawl and a costume contest to the avenue. Proceeds will support the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District’s Trunk or Treat, scheduled for the same Saturday.
The Pumpkin Roll is an annual pub crawl hosted by the Ragamuffin Parade committee, the group behind Bay Ridge’s Halloween procession. Brooklyn Paper reported that this year’s Oct. 24 event will add fundraising for the Fifth Avenue BID’s Trunk or Treat.
Organizers are adding a Halloween costume contest to this year’s crawl. Bars set to participate are Salty Dog, The Harp, Greenhouse Cafe, Pour House, Bakers Bar, Windy City, Status Q, Kettle Black and Pipin’s Pub.
Proceeds to Support Saturday's Family Event
The crawl’s proceeds will support the Fifth Avenue BID’s Trunk or Treat, giving the two Halloween events a shared fundraising and community connection. The family event is scheduled for the same Saturday as the pub crawl.
What the Fifth Avenue BID Does
According to the Bay Ridge 5th Avenue BID, the nonprofit serves Fifth Avenue from 65th to 85th Streets. Its work includes street cleaning, promoting local businesses and hosting community events.
Allison Greaker, president of the Ragamuffin Parade, described the planned Pumpkin Roll as a success for the fundraiser, according to the report.
Community Spirit as the Organizing Principle
Greaker said the goal was “bringing our neighborhood together.” The Ragamuffin Parade committee also supports events organized by local merchants and business improvement districts, according to the report.
Some event listings circulating online said children would be encouraged to wear costumes at Trunk or Treat and that pumpkins would be distributed one per child, first come, first served, while supplies lasted. Those details were not independently confirmed through the Pumpkin Roll’s organizers. The crawl and family event will offer different ways for Bay Ridge residents to take part in the same day’s Halloween festivities.
