H-E-B is pouring $29.3 million into remodeling and expanding its 129,000-square-foot store at 3025 Dowlen Road in west Beaumont, with the grocery chain laying out plans for a new curbside area, a boil house, replacement walk-ins, grocery equipment and associated refrigeration units. The project is slated to break ground on May 1, 2027, and finish by June 12, 2028.
H-E-B revealed the scope of the project earlier this month, according to KFDM, which reported the chain filed project details with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The filing lists a meeting room and fire pump room among the additions, along with metal stud framing work. The City of Beaumont has characterized the overhaul as a major economic development project for the area.
What's Actually Changing Inside the Store
Beyond the new curbside pickup area, the project calls for a boil house, replacement walk-in coolers, associated refrigeration units and updated grocery equipment, per the filing cited in the same report. The addition of a meeting room and fire pump room points to infrastructure upgrades beyond the sales floor, though the filing does not break down costs by category.
The Dowlen Road location already saw a smaller facelift this year. A separate curbside parking lot project at the same store, which addressed how curbside and pharmacy traffic exited and merged, wrapped up by May; the adjacent lot already had 26 spaces, according to the Beaumont Enterprise. Those 26 spots reportedly fill up quickly on busy days, the outlet noted at the time.
Part Of A Broader H-E-B Building Spree
Beaumont's project lands amid a wave of H-E-B investment across Texas. In the Houston area, the chain has outlined $55.5 million in renovations spanning stores in Pearland, Tomball and Angleton, including an expansion in Tomball, per the Houston Business Journal.
A separate Tomball filing shows H-E-B registered a $20 million expansion and renovation for its store at 28520 Tomball Parkway, according to the Houston Chronicle. That project was registered with the state on September 23 as a 96,237-square-foot undertaking and is scheduled to begin March 1, 2027, running through April 2028 — a timeline that overlaps almost exactly with Beaumont's. The Chronicle reported that Pb2 architecture and engineering, based in Arkansas, is listed as the design firm for the Tomball job, and that H-E-B representatives said no further information about that expansion could be shared at the time.
What Remains Unclear For Beaumont Shoppers
H-E-B has not detailed how much, if any, additional square footage the Dowlen Road store will gain, nor has the chain broken down costs within the $29.3 million figure. It also hasn't said whether the store will stay fully open, reduce hours or see access changes once construction begins in 2027. Shoppers will likely have to wait for more specifics as the May 2027 start date approaches.
