Beaumont police officers raced to the 100 block of Sparrow Way shortly after 8 a.m. Friday on a report of a shooting victim, only to determine the person's injuries were self-inflicted. The victim suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, according to Beaumont Police Sergeant Haley Morrow.
The call sent officers into the Caldwood subdivision in Beaumont's West End. Realtor.com lists a Sparrow Way property in Caldwood as a single-family home built in 1978. As officers worked to pin down the exact location of the scene, they searched a nearby drainage canal, as first reported by KBTV Fox 4 Beaumont. A construction crew working in the area told the outlet they heard three or four gunshots around 6:15 a.m., well before officers arrived on scene.
A KFDM crew at the scene observed an ambulance leave quickly, the outlet reported. The nearest major facility, CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth, is a 431-bed hospital and the only Level III Trauma Center between Houston and Baton Rouge, per CHRISTUS Health.
Investigators Work to Confirm the Scene
Official dispatch logs show officers were called to the Sparrow Way address, near its intersection with Oriole Drive, at 8:12 a.m. Friday, according to 12News Now. The station's report notes the drainage ditch system near the intersection is part of why officers worked to narrow down precisely where the shooting happened before determining the wound was self-inflicted.
Beaumont Police Department operates a Real-Time Crime Center. The department is led by Chief Tim Ocnaschek, who previously served as the city's Emergency Management Coordinator and brings nearly four decades of law enforcement experience to the role, according to the City of Beaumont.
Part of a Pattern of Recent Firearm Calls
Friday's response adds to a string of firearm incidents Beaumont police have handled in recent months. Hoodline has previously reported on an October grand jury indictment tied to an Ector Avenue drive-by shooting.
It remains unclear how severe the Sparrow Way victim's injuries are or whether officers recovered a weapon near the canal. Beaumont police have not released further details on the victim's condition.
