A Bedias family's Halloween outing turned into tragedy last Friday when a pickup truck slammed into the back of their SUV on State Highway 30, and the young father driving the vehicle has since died from his injuries. Thomas “Dalton” Mahon, 23, succumbed to his injuries Sunday night, two days after the crash near Roans Prairie in Grimes County left his wife and two young children hurt as well.
The crash happened around 6 p.m. last Friday, Oct. 23, as the family drove eastbound on Highway 30 in a 2026 Nissan Kicks, according to Navasota Examiner. A 2014 Ford F-150 traveling behind them struck the rear of their vehicle. Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Justin Ruiz said the Ford's driver failed to control the vehicle's speed before the impact. The Ford driver did not report any injuries.
Mahon, who was originally from the Longview area, was driving the Nissan with his wife, Kaylee, and their two young children. The family was returning home to Bedias after attending a trunk-or-treat event at Accel at College Station, according to Kaylee's mother, Lori Alberson.
Father and Toddler Son Flown to Houston
Dalton Mahon and the couple's 2-year-old son, Kasen, were airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital in downtown Houston with serious injuries, the Navasota Examiner reported. As of Oct. 28, 2026, Kasen remained hospitalized, and the Navasota Examiner reported that he had undergone surgery for internal injuries and fractures and faced a long road to recovery.
The Navasota Examiner reported that Kaylee Mahon and the couple's 3-year-old daughter were transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan. Family members later said Kaylee was treated and released and that the daughter went home the following day after receiving 17 stitches for a tongue injury.
A Final Gift Amid the Grief
Alberson described Dalton Mahon as a loving husband and devoted father, and the family said that even in death, he gave the ultimate gift of life through organ donation. Alberson has asked people to keep Kaylee, the couple's daughter Kinley, and Kasen in their prayers as the family navigates the emotional and financial toll of the crash.
The family was working to set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover medical bills and other expenses, Alberson told the Navasota Examiner. The crash remains under investigation by Texas DPS, and whether any criminal charges will be filed was not immediately clear.
Another Deadly Crash on Grimes County Roads
The Mahon family's crash is the latest in a string of serious wrecks on Grimes County roadways this year. A separate fatal crash near Bedias occurred Sept. 21 at about 7:30 a.m., when a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado crossed the center line on FM 2620 and collided head-on with a northbound Nissan Armada, according to FOX 44 News. Troopers reported the pickup had been traveling at an unsafe speed before entering a curve. Both drivers, Gilbert Raul Urbano and Katie Harper, were pronounced dead at the scene, while three boys ages 9, 11 and 14 were seriously injured and airlifted to a Houston hospital.
