Bellaire High School's football team has confirmed cases of staph infection among its players, prompting Houston ISD to cancel Friday's varsity showdown against Lamar High School that had been set for 7 p.m. at Delmar Stadium. Under University Interscholastic League guidelines, the scrapped game will now go into the books as a win for Lamar.

According to Click2Houston, there were confirmed cases of the infection among members of the Bellaire football team, which led school officials to pull the plug on the October 2 matchup rather than risk further spread among players. Bellaire Principal Michael Niggli said the call didn't come lightly or in isolation. “The decision is based on guidance from the HISD Health and Medical Department and the Houston Health Department Epidemiology team,” Niggli said.

Houston ISD confirmed it is responding to the situation, telling the outlet that “HISD is taking appropriate steps in response to the confirmed cases.” The district did not detail those steps further, and it remains unclear how many players were affected or whether anyone beyond the football team has been impacted.

How Staph Spreads on the Field

Staph infections are nothing new to high school locker rooms, and Texas's own governing body for school athletics has been warning coaches and parents about them for years. Staphylococcus aureus commonly causes boils and soft-tissue infections but can also lead to more serious illnesses such as pneumonia or bloodstream infections, according to the University Interscholastic League. The UIL notes that most infections occur through direct physical contact of the bacteria with a break in the skin, like a cut or scrape, or through contact with shared equipment and other objects.

Not everyone who carries the bacteria gets sick. The UIL cites CDC estimates that twenty to thirty-five percent of adults and children in the United States are colonized with staph, meaning the bacteria are present on their bodies without causing illness. Still, the organization identifies hand washing as the single most important behavior in preventing infectious disease among athletes, a basic precaution that becomes especially relevant in contact sports like football where skin-to-skin contact and shared gear are routine.

Not the First Texas Team Sidelined This Season

Bellaire isn't the only Texas high school to see its football schedule disrupted by an outbreak this fall. Earlier this month, Savoy ISD canceled its Thursday pep rally and high school football game after several male athletes were diagnosed with staph infections, according to KLTV. That district also moved its junior high game to an away matchup at Fannindel rather than risk exposure at home, though it did not disclose how many students had been diagnosed.

MRSA outbreaks tied to sports teams, including football squads, have been documented since the summer of 2002, per the UIL's health guidance for athletes. Close contact and shared personal items and facilities are cited as factors that can allow skin infections to spread among teammates, according to the CDC's guidance on MRSA prevention for athletes.

For now, Bellaire's season moves forward without Friday's matchup against Lamar, with the forfeit result standing per UIL rules. Neither Houston ISD nor Bellaire has released additional details on the scope of the infections or what specific precautions are being implemented within the athletic program.
