Bagel Dock Cafe, the Calabash shop famous for lines that wrap around the building, is bringing its hand-rolled New York-style bagels to the South Strand. The cafe plans to open a second location at 2016 Highway 17 South in Surfside Beach, with the new spot expected to open in early spring 2027.
The Surfside Beach shop will sit across from Ocean Lakes Family Campground, and its menu will be more streamlined than the Calabash location's, according to MyHorryNews.com. That means breakfast wraps, muffins, cookies, pastries, omelets and drinks alongside the bagels that have built the brand's following in coastal North Carolina. Lines at the Calabash store regularly wrap around the building throughout the year, the outlet reports, a sign of just how loyal that customer base has become.
Bagel Dock Cafe was founded by former New York City firefighter Brian Bonsignore and New York City teacher Christine Cheffo, according to whatnow.com. The cafe's bagels are painstakingly authentic, made with pure filtered water, unbleached and non-bromated flour, and all-natural ingredients.
A Dough Process Built Around New York Imports
The shop makes more than 35 kinds of bagels by hand every morning, fresh, according to the cafe's own description reported by myrtlebeachonline.com. The bagels are made from scratch using all-natural ingredients, and the shop has been explicit about what it leaves out: unfiltered tap water, bromate and corn syrup won't ever be a part of its bagels, per the same account from MyHorryNews.com.
Part of what sets the dough apart is high-quality malt. The cafe also offers more than 12 kinds of gourmet cream cheese, rounding out the lineup.
A Baker from Queens
The shop's baking team includes a baker named Billy from Queens.
Christine Cheffo, the cafe's co-owner, has framed the Surfside Beach expansion as a natural fit for the area's demographics. Surfside Beach is a family community, and the cafe looks forward to serving families there, Cheffo has said, and the business plans to offer new menu items for children along with family-oriented activities at the new location.
