A traffic stop in the 5400 block of Park Avenue South in Bessemer turned up 27,098 grams of methamphetamine, roughly 59.74 pounds, along with 34.5 grams of marijuana, authorities said. A $706,000 bond was set for the man accused of carrying the drugs.
According to AL.com, the stop happened on Monday in western Jefferson County.
The charges were drug trafficking and second-degree possession of marijuana.
A separate large methamphetamine seizure in Jefferson County took place in March, when the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office seized 82 pounds of methamphetamine valued at nearly $1.5 million after stopping a vehicle for erratic driving on Interstate 59/20 near mile marker 104, according to Patch.
Earlier Major Meth Seizures in the County
In December 2024, a search warrant executed by the Jefferson County Vice and Narcotics Division and SWAT Team at a Birmingham address turned up 6,708 grams of methamphetamine, 316 grams of fentanyl, 398 grams of marijuana, eight Oxycodone pills, 28 Adderall pills, and 1.3 grams of a heroin, fentanyl, and meth compound, as reported by ABC 3340. That raid led to the arrest of Cyrus Williams, who was charged with drug trafficking, marijuana possession, and being a person forbidden to possess a pistol, with his total bond set at $120,000, the station noted.
Broader state data suggests methamphetamine remains a persistent concern even as other substances draw growing attention. Alabama's 2026 Drug Threat Assessment, cited by the Alabama Department of Public Health, notes that fentanyl is still ranked as the state's greatest drug threat by law enforcement and treatment respondents, while methamphetamine remains a significant concern statewide.
No additional information on the man's legal representation or any plea has been released.
