Light rain is falling across New York City early Saturday as a sharp autumn cooldown settles in behind Friday’s storms. Temperatures are hovering near the low 50s, and the city is heading for a blustery day that will feel colder than the thermometer suggests.
The rain should taper by mid- to late morning, according to the National Weather Service, with clouds gradually eroding through late day and a high near 52 degrees. Northwest winds of 15 to 20 knots could gust 25 to 30 knots, a notable change from the warmer conditions outlined in Friday’s forecast.
Afternoon Winds Pick Up
Clouds should gradually break later Saturday, with a few brighter stretches developing during the afternoon. Even so, the gusty north wind will keep it feeling raw, especially along exposed streets, bridges and waterfront areas.
Saturday night turns mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to around 40 degrees in the city and nearby urban areas. A Freeze Warning is in effect from midnight through 9 a.m. Sunday for parts of interior Connecticut, the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey, though New York City itself is not included in the warning.
Sunday Brings Sun, But Not Much Warmth
Sunday should be sunny but still cool, with a high near 56 and lighter northeast winds of 6 to 10 mph. It will be a much better day for outdoor plans than Saturday, though definitely a jacket day rather than a lingering taste of summer.
Temperatures climb to about 66 degrees Monday and 72 Tuesday. Wednesday stays seasonable near 63, with breezy northeast winds continuing at times.
Offshore Low Keeps Coastal Conditions Unsettled
An area of low pressure developing offshore could keep northeast winds elevated around the coast through much of next week, with the National Weather Service warning that coastal impacts remain possible. The forecast is still lower-confidence beyond the weekend, so waterfront conditions may need close watching.
Thursday brings a 24% chance of precipitation and a high near 63. Friday's high is forecast near 64. For New Yorkers, the short version is simple: carry rain gear Saturday morning, bundle up Saturday night and enjoy the sun when Sunday arrives.
