A new taqueria is set to take over the former Carmelo's Pizza and Italian Ice space in downtown Boyertown, bringing tacos, tortas and burritos to a storefront that spent years serving slices. Taqueria Las Vias plans to open at 116 E. Philadelphia Ave. during the first week of November, according to the owner's plans for the historic downtown building.
The restaurant is owned by Pablo Cruz, who also runs Taqueria El Habanero at 36 Tennis Avenue in Ambler, which has an online ordering page at SkyTab Online. As reported by WhatNow, Las Vias will serve traditional Mexican fare including quesadillas, burritos, nachos, tacos, tostadas and tortas once it opens in Boyertown.
A post on local Facebook page Berks County Views announced that Las Vias would open in Boyertown. Building a Better Boyertown, the borough's downtown revitalization group, responded with its own welcome: “We are excited to welcome them to Boyertown!”
Signage Already Up, Site Prep Underway
Local blog Berks County Eats reported in late September that “Coming Soon” signage had already gone up on the storefront.
Before Las Vias, the address was home to Carmelo's Pizza & Italian Ice.
A Downtown Organization Welcomes the New Business
Building a Better Boyertown is Boyertown's Main Street organization.
Boyertown borough covers just 0.77 square miles in eastern Berks County and has an estimated 2026 population of 4,343 residents, according to World Population Review. Census Bureau estimates cited by the same source put the borough's median household income at $56,723 in 2026, with a median age of 41.3 years — numbers that frame the modest but steady local customer base a small taqueria will be counting on.
Community Enthusiasm Ahead of Opening
Downtown Boyertown also draws visitors beyond its resident base, leaning on regional attractions like the Colebrookdale Railroad heritage tourist line and the General Carl Spaatz National USAAF Museum to bring foot traffic into the commercial district, per Building a Better Boyertown. That visitor flow could matter for a new restaurant trying to build momentum beyond just locals.
The Berks County Views post generated community enthusiasm, according to WhatNow, as Las Vias prepares to open its doors in November.
