Three people were shot in Boyle Heights on Friday afternoon after an altercation turned violent near Fourth and Fresno streets, and the gunman had not been caught as of Friday evening, police said. All three victims were taken to the hospital, though their conditions were not immediately known.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a reported shooting near Fourth and Fresno streets just after 4 p.m., according to NBC Los Angeles. Police say an altercation broke out before the gunman opened fire, shooting at two people before turning the gun on a third person who was sitting inside a car nearby.
All three people struck by gunfire were taken to the hospital, and the LAPD said their conditions were unknown as of Friday evening. The shooter fled the scene and remained at large, and police have not released any suspect description, said to have provided no suspect information at all.
No Suspect Details Released in Ongoing Search
Unlike some past incidents in the neighborhood, investigators have not shared a vehicle, clothing description, or any other lead on the person responsible for Friday's shooting. That absence of detail leaves the case open-ended for now, with the LAPD's account limited to the sequence of events: an altercation, gunfire aimed at two people, and a third victim shot while seated in a car.
Friday's shooting is at least the second incident this year in which a Boyle Heights gunman fled the scene without being identified. In July, a man in his 30s was shot twice at a gas station near South Lorena Street and Whittier Boulevard during a street takeover that drew more than 200 cars, according to the Los Angeles Times. That victim was also hospitalized in unknown condition, and the shooter in that case, possibly driving a gray Nissan Altima, was never apprehended at the time of reporting.
Earlier Case Shows How Long These Investigations Can Linger
An even earlier shooting in the neighborhood illustrates how unresolved these cases can remain. In April 2025, three teenagers ages 15, 16 and 18 were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after police responded to a call about a multi-victim shooting at 3:51 p.m. in the 400 block of North Soto Street, the Times reported. The suspect in that incident was last seen driving north on North Soto Street in a gray BMW sedan and was described as a heavyset man wearing a tie-dyed sweatshirt and blue pants.
There is no indication that Friday's shooting is connected to either of those earlier cases, and nothing in the current reporting establishes whether it happened at the same location or under similar circumstances. As of Friday evening, the only confirmed details remain the ones LAPD provided: an altercation, a gunman who shot at two people before shooting a third inside a car, and three victims hospitalized while the shooter remains unidentified and at large.
