Manatee County deputies are swapping patrol duty for candy duty this week, as the sheriff's office hosts a free Halloween carnival for local families. Manatee Sheriff's Spooktactical Night runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, October 22, at the MCSO Operations Center, 600 301 Blvd. W. in Bradenton, and it costs nothing to attend.

The event, detailed in a Manatee County Sheriff's Office Facebook post, features vehicle displays, demonstrations and trick-or-treating at unit stations. Kids can expect face painting, candy and other children's activities. Free hotdogs and water will be handed out.

Parking is free across the street at the former DeSoto Square Mall site, with handicapped parking available on-site at the operations center. That mall parcel carries its own local history: the enclosed shopping center opened in 1973 as Manatee County's first of its kind and operated for nearly 50 years before closing permanently in April 2021 ahead of planned mixed-use redevelopment, according to Bradenton Patch.

Community Participation

Volunteer organization Manatee County Search and Rescue also plans to take part, displaying emergency response equipment.

A Halloween Event for Families

The sheriff's office is hosting the event as a family Halloween gathering.

The event joins a broader October lineup of family safety events around Bradenton, including the Bradenton Parks Goblin Gathering at G.T. Bray Park on October 16.

The Agency Behind the Event

Sheriff Rick Wells began his third four-year term leading the Manatee County Sheriff's Office in January 2025, per Pulse of Manatee.

That spending comes amid a notable local crime trend. Manatee County recorded seven murders in 2025, down from 10 in 2024, alongside a nearly 40% drop in robberies across the county, according to WWSB data cited in Hoodline's prior reporting on a Bradenton murder case. Spooktactical Night is a community event hosted by the sheriff's office.
