A 68-year-old Bradenton man died Saturday afternoon after his SUV left the roadway and struck a tree on Saddle Creek Trail in southern Sarasota County, with troopers saying he may have experienced a medical episode just before the crash. The man was driving a blue Chevrolet Traverse north on the rural road when he lost control around 12:45 p.m.
According to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the Traverse veered right, left the roadway, and struck a ditch before hitting a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened on Saddle Creek Trail just north of State Road 72, also known as Clark Road, and remains under investigation.
An Equestrian Community
Saddle Creek Estates is a deed-restricted equestrian community. The neighborhood has about 25 miles of riding trails.
In 2024, distracted driving was linked to nearly 300 fatalities and more than 2,200 serious injuries statewide. It is unresolved whether a medical event preceded the Traverse's departure from the road or whether the impact itself caused the driver's death, and that question remains part of the ongoing investigation.
How Florida Handles Medical Fitness After a Crash
When troopers suspect a driver's health played a role in a crash, state law provides a specific process for review. Under Florida Statute § 322.126, physicians, law enforcement agencies, or even private citizens can confidentially report a driver to the state if they suspect a physical or mental impairment affects that person's ability to drive safely, and those reports are exempt from public records laws to encourage candid disclosures.
Separately, Florida Statute § 322.221 allows the state to issue a mandatory five-day notice requiring a driver to undergo medical re-examination following a crash involving death, injury, or serious public safety concerns; drivers may be required to submit medical information within 45 days. Those reports are then reviewed by the Florida Medical Advisory Board, which has 11 voluntary members and a department-employed chairman, all licensed doctors, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Another Fatal Crash Along the Clark Road Corridor
Saturday's crash marks the second fatal collision near the State Road 72 corridor in less than a month. Three weeks and three days earlier, a 21-year-old Sarasota motorcyclist was killed on September 23 in a collision with an SUV at the intersection of Clark Road and McIntosh Road, a stretch Hoodline previously covered as part of a string of recent local traffic deaths.
Historical data compiled by sarasotalaw.org shows the county logged 395 traffic fatalities and 26,745 injuries across more than 45,800 collisions between 2017 and 2023, averaging about 6,550 annual crashes before recent declines.
Statewide Numbers Still Climbing in 2026
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported 270,463 crashes statewide through October 8, including 1,758 fatal crashes and 1,893 total fatalities, along with 173,852 injuries and 116,223 injury crashes, according to the same crash dashboard cited by the Herald-Tribune. For comparison, Florida recorded roughly 366,300 crashes in all of 2025, resulting in an estimated 2,850 to 2,930 fatalities, a statewide total that had already declined about 4% from 2024, per the department's figures.
The crash happened Saturday on Saddle Creek Trail.
