A weeklong manhunt in Bridgeport ended Sunday night when police caught up with 57-year-old Jorge Luis Ortiz on the city's East Side, closing out the search for a man accused of gunning down a 48-year-old driver in what investigators believe was a road rage shooting. Ortiz ran from an officer before he was quickly apprehended, according to investigators, and he was not carrying a firearm when taken into custody.
Ortiz is wanted on charges including murder and criminal possession of a firearm, according to authorities cited by News 12 Long Island. The case traces back to the morning of October 12, when 48-year-old Nelson Manuel Batista was found lying in the street beside his vehicle near Park Avenue and Cottage Street with a gunshot wound, authorities say. He was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Dashcam Video Helped Break the Case
Civilian car camera footage captured video stills showing two men struggling on the ground over a handgun near the Park Avenue and Cottage Street intersection before Batista was fatally shot in the chest, according to reporting cited on Muck Rack. Bridgeport police publicly released the imagery and urged the suspect to turn himself in. Detectives and patrol officers searched for Ortiz for days before his arrest.
Detectives with the Bridgeport Police Department's Major Crimes Unit closed the intersection for approximately two hours after the 9 a.m. shooting to collect forensic evidence and process the scene, the Daily Voice reported. Homicide Detective Elizabeth Santora was listed as a contact for information about the case, and the same outlet's report notes that Homicide Detective Jeffrey Holtz confirmed Batista's killing marked Bridgeport's eighth homicide of 2026.
Mayor and Police Chief to Brief the Public
Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim and Police Chief Roderick Porter scheduled a joint news conference for Monday to discuss Ortiz's arrest, according to Patch. Ortiz was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning in Bridgeport Superior Court, with bond set at $2.5 million.
If convicted, Ortiz would face penalties under Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a, which classifies murder as a Class A felony punishable by a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison and up to 60 years, according to the Allan F. Friedman Criminal Lawyer firm. Ortiz also faces a charge of criminal possession of a firearm.
Open Questions Remain for Court
Key questions remain unresolved heading into court proceedings, including what specific driving dispute precipitated the confrontation, who originally produced the firearm, and whether Ortiz had prior legal disqualifications that form the basis of the weapons charge, according to News 12 Long Island.
The shooting fits into a troubling national pattern. Research from the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund found that 483 people were shot in road rage incidents nationwide in 2023, resulting in 118 deaths and averaging one person shot every 18 hours. The same analysis found that states without concealed carry permitting requirements saw nearly triple the rate of road rage shooting victimizations compared to states with stricter permitting standards like Connecticut's.
Community Mourns Batista
Batista's visitation and wake were scheduled for Monday night, with funeral services set for Tuesday morning. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Funeraria Luz de Paz in Bridgeport, according to a notice posted on Legacy.com.
The killing adds to a difficult stretch for Bridgeport, which saw gunfire near a Boston Avenue Citgo last month. For now, the East Side arrest closes one chapter of the investigation, even as the circumstances that led to the deadly confrontation on Park Avenue remain under scrutiny.
