A gunman approached a 37-year-old man outside 2000 Prospect Avenue in East Tremont early on September 26, 2026 and opened fire, striking the victim in the right leg before fleeing west on East 178th Street toward parts unknown. The shooting happened at approximately 1:20 a.m., and the suspect remains unidentified and at large.
According to a wanted notice posted by NYPD Crime Stoppers
, the attacker approached the victim in front of the building before discharging the firearm and running off. The address sits within the confines of the 48th Precinct, whose stationhouse at 450 Cross Bronx Expressway serves central Bronx neighborhoods including Belmont, East Tremont, and West Farms, according to

The apartment building itself is a five-story, 65-unit walk-up constructed in 1922 and sits
Crezly
in the 10457 ZIP code of the central Bronx.
A Building With a Troubled Recent History
This is not the first violent incident at the address in recent weeks. A stabbing occurred at the same Prospect Avenue address on September 25, one day before the shooting; Hoodline reported on it in an article dated October 3, 2026: a stabbing at the same Prospect Avenue address that also sent NYPD searching for a suspect who fled on foot. Whether the stabbing and the shooting are connected, or whether the shooter and victim knew each other beforehand, remains an open question that detectives have not addressed publicly.
In May 2026, the 48th Precinct stationhouse became the headquarters for the newly created Patrol Borough Bronx North command, which oversees police operations across central and northern Bronx precincts. The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center offers programs for youth and families in Crotona.
St. Barnabas Hospital's Level II Trauma Center
St. Barnabas Hospital has a Level II Trauma Center at 4422 Third Avenue, according to SBH Health System.
The incident is the latest in a string of shootings reported across the 48th Precinct's footprint in recent months, including a September shooting near Arthur Avenue and a double shooting near the West Farms subway station. In May, a separate Prospect Avenue shooting also prompted a Crime Stoppers wanted notice.
Potential Charges If a Suspect Is Caught
Should detectives identify and arrest the shooter, prosecutors would have a range of felony charges available. Under New York Penal Law, intentionally causing serious physical injury with a firearm can constitute Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony carrying five to 25 years in prison, according to the New York State Senate. A lesser charge, Assault in the Second Degree, applies when physical injury is inflicted with a deadly weapon and carries up to seven years. Prosecutors could also consider other charges, depending on the circumstances.
NYPD Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $3,500 for information leading to an arrest and indictment. Those rewards are funded and administered by the non-profit New York City Police Foundation through private donations rather than taxpayer money. Since its founding in 1983, the Crime Stoppers program has helped clear more than 5,600 violent crimes citywide, including nearly 1,600 homicides and attempted homicides, and has approved over $3.4 million in tip rewards.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or the Spanish-language line at 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
