A trip to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office took an unexpected turn when a citizen showed up wanting to dispose of two mortar rounds, forcing administrators to temporarily shut down offices and reroute traffic outside the Brooksville headquarters.
The devices were brought to the sheriff's office at 18900 Cortez Boulevard, according to fox13news.com. Once the mortar rounds were discovered, the sheriff's office contacted the Citrus County Sheriff's Office Bomb Team to examine and properly dispose of them, the outlet reported.
Roads Blocked Off During Investigation
While the bomb team worked, deputies cordoned off the area in front of the building. Traffic was detoured and rerouted away from the sheriff's office as authorities investigated in the front parking lot, and no vehicles were permitted down Sheriff Mylander Way or on Cortez Boulevard in front of the office during that time, per the station's report.
The disruption was short-lived. Roadways reopened shortly before 2 p.m., and officials said the situation was resolved and the area was cleared for safety, the same account notes.
Separate Report Describes Masaryktown Activity
A Hernando County Sheriff's Office Facebook post from the same day separately described an increased law enforcement presence near Hviezdoslav Street and Mudron Street in Masaryktown, with deputies on scene regarding a suspicious device found on Roosevelt Avenue, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office on Facebook. That post said the Citrus County Sheriff's Office Bomb Team was en route to the scene and later reported that the Citrus County Bomb Squad disposed of the device safely.
The Facebook post advised the public to avoid the area if possible while units worked to clear the scene.
