Downtown Brooksville trades its usual Saturday quiet for trick-or-treaters, costume contests and a SWAT truck parked along the street today, as the Safety Fun Fest takes over from 4 to 8 p.m. The free, family-friendly event pairs the Hernando County Sheriff's Office with Brooksville Main Street's Halloween Howl for an evening that blends trick-or-treating with an up-close look at the agencies that patrol, protect and respond across the county.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, this year's Safety & Fun Fest is hosted jointly by HCSO and Brooksville Main Street, offering a fun and educational experience for the public. Children of all ages and their parents are welcome, and the event is set entirely in downtown Brooksville. Brooksville Main Street's own event page confirms the timing, noting that this year's event is Saturday, October 24th, 2026 from 4 pm to 8 pm in Downtown Brooksville.

Trick-or-Treating, Contests and a Downtown Treat Trail

Brooksville Main Street is running trick-or-treating throughout downtown as part of the Halloween Howl, alongside music and costume contests open to adults, children and pets. The event's listing describes arts and crafts vendors, face painting, food trucks and a Touch-A-Truck event rounding out the evening. Per Nature Coaster, additional activities include dance contests, a trick-or-treat trail, a moonlight movie and spooky hayrides, with the goal described as providing a fun, educational experience for the public while strengthening community connections.

The trick-or-treat trail winds through participating downtown businesses before reaching what the Hernando Sun calls the mysteriously marvelous South Booville Avenue. That trail is part of a Downtown Treat Trail sponsored by Tampa General Hospital, Brooksville and Spring Hill, according to Nature Coaster. The Hernando Sun also notes that the Lowman Law Firm is sponsoring the dance contests, inviting attendees to show off their best Thriller moves, and that free downtown parking will be available for the night.

SWAT Trucks, K-9s and Drones on Display

For families curious about what their local deputies actually do, the Sheriff's Office display is the centerpiece. HCSO's Facebook announcement lists its K-9 unit, SWAT team, Marine unit and drone unit as featured attractions, giving visitors a chance to see specialized law enforcement equipment up close. Nature Coaster similarly reports that attendees can expect an up-close look at the SWAT truck, K-9 units, the COPPS Unit, Marine and Aviation Units, and high-tech drones.

Hernando County Fire Rescue will also participate. The mix of law enforcement and fire rescue displays is meant to let residents interact directly with the agencies that serve the county, rather than simply reading about them.

A Community Tradition With Local Sponsors

Tampa General Hospital is among the sponsors of this year's Downtown Treat Trail. The downtown Halloween gathering isn't entirely new to the area; Brooksville Main Street promoted a similar family-friendly downtown Halloween event back on October 29, 2022, which included trick-or-treating at participating businesses, interactive games, a costume contest and an Orange Avenue Market, sponsored at the time by the Lowman Family Foundation, according to Brooksville Main Street's event archive.

With the event running through 8 p.m. today, families still have time to catch a costume contest and see the SWAT truck before the Safety Fun Fest wraps for the night. The evening pairs Halloween festivities with displays from local public-safety agencies.
