A 29-year-old Caldwell man has died after the car he was driving struck a median on westbound Interstate 84 near South Maple Grove Road in Boise. Jourdan Bates was rushed to a Meridian hospital for emergency treatment but could not be saved.
Bates was pronounced dead at 7:08 p.m. in the emergency department of St. Luke's Medical Center in Meridian, according to the Idaho Statesman, which reported the coroner's office confirmed his death. He was the car's sole occupant, and the coroner said no one else was involved in the crash.
The crash was first reported by Idaho News 6, which identified Bates as the driver and said he was killed in a single-car crash on the interstate. The outlet reported that officials had not yet released details about the cause or manner of his death as of their report.
Investigation Remains Open
Idaho State Police is investigating the crash, the Statesman's report notes. No cause or manner of death had been determined at the time the coroner's office released information about the case.
The crash adds to a string of fatal wrecks reported on the same stretch of interstate this year. Idaho State Police previously investigated a separate single-vehicle fatality on eastbound I-84 near milepost 62 east of Boise in October, and the Statesman has also reported on a semitruck driver who died in the hospital after a crash on I-84 east of Boise that partially blocked the roadway for about three hours.
Idaho's Roads Seeing a Deadly Stretch
The crash comes as Idaho has logged a rising death toll on its highways this year. Data from the Idaho Office of Highway Safety, cited by the Idaho Transportation Department, showed 90 people were killed in crashes on Idaho roads during the state's 2026 100 Deadliest Days. No further details about Bates's crash, including what led his car to strike the median, have been released.
