A 41-year-old Cañon City man is behind bars after Fremont County deputies say he stabbed someone during a botched robbery attempt in the Penrose area earlier this month. Joshua Ghent was taken into custody without incident on October 13 in the 300 block of North 16th Street in Cañon City, about a week after the attack sent a victim to the hospital.
The case began on October 6, when the Fremont County Sheriff's Office said deputies were sent to St. Thomas More Hospital for a reported stabbing, according to KRDO. Investigators determined that the victim had been stabbed during an attempted robbery in the Penrose area earlier that night, per the same report. Deputies went on to identify Ghent as the suspect in the days that followed.
Officials obtained an arrest warrant for Ghent before tracking him down nearly a week later. As Cañon City Daily Record reported, the Fremont County Sheriff's Office arrested Ghent on charges related to the attempted robbery and assault. He was booked into the Fremont County Detention Center following his arrest.
Charges and Bond Details
Ghent is now facing a criminal attempt charge for aggravated robbery along with first-degree assault with intent to cause serious bodily harm, the station's report states. Those charges reflect the sheriff's office's account of what happened during the alleged robbery attempt that left the victim stabbed.
Reports differ on the exact terms of Ghent's bond. KRDO reported that he is currently being held on a $50,000 cash or surety bond, while KKTV reported, citing the sheriff's office, that he is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. Court records cited by that station show Ghent is scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on October 21.
What Remains Unknown
Authorities have not released details about the victim's identity, injuries, or current condition. The exact location within the Penrose area where the alleged robbery and stabbing took place has also not been specified, and officials have not described the weapon involved or detailed the sequence of events that led to Ghent being identified as a suspect.
