A man was found shot to death inside a home on the unit block of Quire Avenue in Capitol Heights on Saturday, and homicide detectives are still trying to figure out who did it and why. Police have not released the victim's name, have not described a suspect, and have not announced any arrest.
Officers responded to the Quire Avenue address after a report of a shooting, according to FOX 5 DC, which cited the Prince George's County Police Department. When officers arrived, they found an adult male inside the residence suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are withholding the man's identity pending official confirmation and notification of his next of kin, per the same report. Investigators have not released a description of any suspects, nor have they detailed what led up to the gunfire. No arrest has been announced.
Detectives Press for a Motive
Prince George's County Police Department homicide detectives are working the scene to establish a motive and identify anyone involved in the shooting, the outlet's report notes. Anyone with information has been asked to call Homicide Unit detectives at 301-516-2512.
This is not the first time Capitol Heights has seen a deadly indoor shooting. In a case from late 2022, a man was fatally shot early one Saturday after officers were called to the 20 block of Chamber Avenue at about 1:25 a.m. for a reported shooting, according to The Washington Post. In a separate Capitol Heights case detailed by Patch, 19-year-old Ky-Mari Bowman of Waldorf was found with gunshot wounds outside a home on the 500 block of Abel Avenue and died at a hospital a short time later.
A Violent Week Across the County
Saturday's shooting follows a particularly bloody stretch for Prince George's County. Just two days earlier, on October 29, police were investigating three separate homicides in a single day, all involving adult male victims, with scenes spanning a private residence, a roadway and a wooded park area, according to Southern Maryland News Net. One of those victims was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the middle of the roadway in the 1700 block of Belle Haven Drive in Landover at approximately 5:15 a.m., as reported by Daily Voice, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Before that cluster of cases, the county's homicide numbers had actually been trending downward. Murders were down 33 percent compared with the same point in 2025 and down 55 percent compared with the same point in 2024, per Southern Maryland News Net's reporting on county police data. Investigators had also closed roughly 79 percent of the county's homicide cases for the year before the three new October 29 investigations were opened, according to the same Daily Voice report.
Part of a Broader Downward Trend
The county closed out 2025 with 66 murders recorded by December 30, putting it on pace to finish the year with fewer than 100 homicides, according to FOX 45 Baltimore. The Washington Post reported that the county's homicide total was projected to stay below triple digits for the first time since 2020, a decline the paper described as consistent with a broader national trend of falling homicide rates. Saturday's shooting on Quire Avenue, along with the three homicides investigated just two days prior, underscores that even as the county's overall numbers trend lower, violence continues to strike individual neighborhoods like Capitol Heights without warning.
