Captain D's has closed its Whitehall restaurant at 3588 E. Main St., leaving the fast-food seafood chain with just one remaining location in Columbus. The East Side building now sits boarded up, its signage stripped away, a quiet end for a restaurant that opened only four years ago with a stripped-down, drive-thru-first design.
According to 614NOW, the Whitehall store has also been scrubbed from Captain D's own website list of locations, confirming the closure is permanent rather than a temporary hiatus. That leaves Columbus proper with a single Captain D's, located at 1959 Innis Rd. Yelp's listing for the Whitehall address now simply reads closed, matching what passersby have seen at the shuttered East Main Street site.
A Smaller Format Built for Speed
The Whitehall restaurant wasn't a typical Captain D's to begin with. It opened in October 2022 as one of the chain's new Express locations, a format built around a smaller footprint and faster drive-thru turnaround rather than a sit-down dining experience. The site measured just 970 square feet, compared with the traditional 2,000-square-foot Captain D's restaurant, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Rather than offering indoor seating, the Whitehall location only featured a drive-thru and a walk-up window, the Dispatch reported at the time. The design swapped a dining room for speed, betting that Central Ohio customers wanted their fried fish and hush puppies fast rather than a place to linger.
Why Captain D's Went Small
The Express concept wasn't unique to Whitehall. Captain D's told the Dispatch its smaller prototype came out of guest feedback and a need for flexibility in pricier metro markets. Space comes at a premium in many metropolitan areas like Columbus, and this smaller model gives us a lot of flexibility, the company said at the time. The format was designed to offer flexibility in pricier metro markets.
Columbus was among the first cities to get one, following the debut Express location in Atlanta and ahead of a later opening in suburban St. Louis.
What's Left in Central Ohio
With the Whitehall closure, Captain D's now operates 16 locations across Ohio, including the sole remaining Columbus restaurant on Innis Road and one additional Central Ohio eatery in Newark, per 614NOW's reporting. No reason for the Whitehall closure has been made public, and it remains unclear exactly when the location shut its doors or whether operating details have changed at the chain's two surviving Central Ohio restaurants.
