A car approached Bella Italia restaurant in North Chesterfield Wednesday evening, and the owner says she saw it and started to run before it hit the building. She was locking one of the restaurant's entrance doors around 7:42 p.m. when she spotted the car approaching and started to run before it slammed into the dining room.

The crash happened at Bella Italia, located at 6407 Iron Bridge Place in North Chesterfield, within Chesterfield County, according to Virginia Tourism Corporation, which lists the Italian-American eatery. Chesterfield Fire and EMS reported that a driver crashed through the restaurant Wednesday evening, as WTVR first reported. Photos shared by the department showed major damage to the front of the building, though the department said no one was hurt.

Trapped Driver Freed by Specialized Rescue Crews

Firefighters arriving on scene found the driver trapped inside the vehicle, which had come to rest inside the dining area. Firefighters from Chesterfield County Fire and EMS freed the driver from the vehicle.

A separate crash on Jan. 12, 2025, involved a vehicle striking a house and displacing two adults and three pets.

A Stretch of Road With a Troubled Safety Record

The crash adds to a sobering record for Chesterfield County roadways. The county logged 6,191 total motor vehicle crashes and 33 traffic fatalities among its 271,102 licensed drivers in 2024, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.

Vehicle-into-building crashes like the one at Bella Italia are far from rare nationally. The Storefront Safety Council estimates that vehicles crash into commercial buildings and storefronts more than 100 times per day across the country, causing roughly 16,000 injuries and 2,600 fatalities annually. Research cited by barrier manufacturer Blockaides attributes 41% of such storefront crashes to pedal error — drivers inadvertently hitting the accelerator instead of the brake — and notes that restaurants account for 19% of all storefront collision sites nationwide.

What Could Come Next

Virginia law treats reckless driving as a criminal matter rather than a simple traffic ticket. Under Virginia Code § 46.2-852, operating a vehicle in a manner that endangers the life, limb, or property of any person constitutes general reckless driving, a Class 1 misdemeanor. It remains unknown whether investigators believe pedal error, speed alone, or another factor caused the crash, and how long Bella Italia will need to repair the structural damage before reopening.
