One person died Wednesday morning after a passenger sedan left County Road 105 and plunged into the Willow Slough Bypass in the Yolo Bypass area near Davis. The crash sent an unknown amount of gasoline and other vehicle fluids into the canal, and the circumstances that led the car off the roadway remained under investigation.
According to The Sacramento Bee, the crash was reported at about 7:36 a.m. near County Roads 105 and 29, roughly two miles northeast of Davis. The sedan went off the roadway and into the water, resulting in the single fatality, and authorities had not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave County Road 105.
Fuel Entered the Canal in an Unknown Amount
Beyond the loss of life, the crash raised environmental concerns along the waterway. The same report notes that the sedan's crash caused an unknown amount of gasoline and other vehicle fluids to enter the canal, though the scope of that spill had not been quantified at the time of reporting. The outlet's account does not specify whether any cleanup or containment response followed, and the circumstances of the crash remained under investigation as of Wednesday.
A separate account from Fox40, published in March 2022, describes a fatal Yolo County canal crash involving a driver who the California Highway Patrol said was speeding south on Jefferson Boulevard before losing control near Babel Slough Road on a Thursday. That was a separate event from the Wednesday, October 7, 2026, crash near County Roads 105 and 29. In the Fox40 account, the car veered off the road and overturned into a nearby canal, where it was completely submerged by the time emergency personnel arrived; the driver was extracted but later died.
A Recurring Hazard in Yolo County's Waterways
Fatal crashes involving Yolo County's network of canals and sloughs are not new. A crash in southern Yolo County left one person dead in late December 2024, as reported by CBS Sacramento, and a fatal collision was investigated at a Yolo County landfill in December 2025, according to the Davis Enterprise. Two people were killed in an early-morning crash in the county in November 2022, per KCRA.
Wednesday's crash remains an open investigation, and no further details on the cause, the identity of the person killed, or any road or waterway closures have been released.
